Take the door panel off from the inside. reach inside and undo the rod that locks and unlocks the door and 2 screws with a size no. 10 wretch and it should come right off.

    go to autozone and buy a special tool that looks like a spoon and it's especially made to take the door panel off. Pull about 5 to 6 screws off the panel and undo all the rubber stopper around the door (use your special tool for that) pull the door panel upward in a rocking motion and pull the screw from behind the door handle also.

Only way is to get a coat hanger and make a small hook on one end and try to slide it between the window and door panel and try to hook the door latch from inside the door.

Chevy 1500 1996 driver side cannot get out
Inside the door panel there is a metal rod that connects the door handle to the latch. Over time they will stretch. You have to use a pair of vise grips to put a slight bend back in that rod.

How do you get the door panel off of a 1996 Chevy Silverado when both the inside and outside door handles are broke.
If it's like most all other door panels, you have a couple of phillips screws in the arm rest, a screw behind the handle, (inside the vehicle), the window crank usually has a c=clip behind it, you can usually just push it out with a screwdriver. sometimes it's held there by a screw. The outer edges of the panel are held to the door by plastic rivits, just take a medium sized flathead screwdriver and pry it beteen the panel and the door, and slide it till hit one of those rivits, then just pull on the screwdriver thereby pulling out the rivits.

Broken inside door handle-1996 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab
On almost all GM's there will be a screw in the recess that the handle sits in. After removing this screw, gently wiggle this cup out of it's hole and there should be a metal rod attached to the back of it with a small clip. Unclip this and it's out - installation is the reverse. Just don't lose the clip or let the linkage rod fall down inside or you will have to remove the door panel. It shouldn't take five minutes to replace and most parts stores now carry GM door handle assemblies. Good Luck!
