Mazda 3 - Climate control is stuck at 18 degree celcius, fuses are all fine. Is there any way to repair this as the dealership has quoted me R13 000 to replace the whole unit.
It seems like the knob does not respond when it's turned to adjust the temperature.
I had that, got a new unit from incurance company scrapyard for $80, changin it was $20 and when opening the old one (the knob is a potentiometer) there was just excess oil between contact surfaces... Local M dealer gave me an estimate of $1500+job
Ms Terry, sounds like I have the same problem on my 2006 Mazda 3. They want to charge me $900+ just for the part, and my warranty will not cover it.
What do I need to do to see if mine also has the excess oil/contact issue? I am not afraid to attempt to fix this myself even though I am not a car expert, but I am very common sense! (I've done numerous "aftermarket fun things to my car successfully before).
Do I just pull the knob until it pops off? Although the heater doesn't work, thank goodness the A/C works (I live in hot So CA) so I don't want to break the unit altogether.
Please please help this chick out.. in this economy I'm too busy getting pay cuts to be able to afford replacing a $900 part, and because a 4 year old car's warranty refuses to cover this!
Nevermind! I fixed it!! You were 100% right, Ms Terry!! There was lubricant glopped everywhere on that dial inside. I wiped it off with some Kleenex (now I wish I had cleaned it even better) and it WORKS again! No quoted $900.00 part Labor because (and I quote) "THe whole computer brain of the climate control is broken". B.S.!! Also, while I was in there, I saw one of the contacts was loose and then eventually came off. I just Super Glued it back on. :) :) THANK YOU!!!!!
Hi Gidgey, How did you remove the knob? Did you have to remove the heater controls or did the knob pop off as you said? My Mazda 3 is up for sale and I don't want to risk breaking the control and making things worse! Your help would be much appreciated! Thanks
Robby.,, because of the way the whole car is interlocked, you need to remove section by section to get to the climate control knob. Here is an awesome step-by-step diagram I used:

You can even see where I posted my own questions and answers during the process! Good luck! Power to the people!! :) :)

Also Robby, you need to really pull HARD to get the cigg lighter section out. Then when you get to the climate control panel, you need to pull really hard to the left.. just push it to the left as hard as you can, and at the same time pull it out with a firm pull. It'll make sense if you look really closely into the sides of the unit where you will see these small slips holding it in.
Be careful once you get to the climate control knobs. Once you pull it out of it's clipped state, the plastic will come off. The careful part comes in when you take the screws out from the back of the climate control box. I, and another poster, learned the hard way that you should hold it upside down when taking the screws out and putting them back in, otherwise it's likely a tiny screw will fall into the box and behind the circuit board... you will then have an irritating time bending the circuit board trying to get the crew back out. Again, just hold the control panel box upside down while taking the screws out and screwing them back in.
Thanks very much! I'll give it a go. I was quoted £650 by my local Mazda in the UK to change the whole panel. I've also seen a panel on ebay for £80, but it might have the fault on it if it came out of a scrap vehicle. Everything is throw away these days, no one ever bothers to repair anything! Cheers

dude check the fuses in the bottom left of driver side , i had that issue and just changed the radio one to a bigger fuse and it turned right back on , it was strange ,
SOURCE: 2004 RX8 electric system
The radio screws holding the radio are not tight enough. to eliminate this problem remove the radio and adjust the pressure screw in the rear of the radio so it comes out farther>. if the radio is not far enough in the compartment to push in that button the radio controls will not work

There is a well known problem that is a manufacturer's defect with the soldered connection on the circuit board behind the temperature knob. There is a fix to re-solder the connections but the dealer will gladly take $450 to replace it with the same bad board that will last you a while. Look for the link to show you how to fix it yourself.
