Replaced crank and cam position sensor on 2007 chevrolet 5.3l silverado 1500 ltz. cleared up code for crank position sensor now code p0340 for cam position sensor circuit is showing up. dont have a scope or scanner

I would think it would be just the Camshaft Position Sensor.I looked up the codes and they say pretty much the samething.

Sounds like the timing belt broke. Unfortunately this vehicle was not equiped with no contact valves so if that is the case you will need to have the engine and Head rebuilt. If the crank position sensor can't sense the position of the crank it should shutdown the electrical to keep you from damaging your engine.

Ive personally done time belt and water pump on a 94 3000gt and this is not a job for a rookie not saying you are but im just letting you know. These motors are ZERO interference motors and if the timing it out by one tooth buhbye valves. So if your not confident in yourself i wouldnt attempted doing this on your own. It is a long job especially in car. If your planning on changing the water pump put a new belt in the timing belt is the leading cause to failure in these engines so put a new belt you can get a kit that has all the pulleys. Now for the tensioner unless the car has lots of miles on it you wont hafta change the tensioner just remember to compress it properly. Other than that the first post was rite cam and crank have nothing to do with the water pump but keep in mind they are located at the front of the motor right where the timing belt/water pump job will be taking place so personally if you have the codes and if it was me doing the job id be doing the sensors at the same time. Also as i said before if the car has lots of miles on it your not that far from pulling the heads off so me id be doing head gasket and valve seals too that way you have a fresh motor thats good for another 100 plus thousand miles. That makes the computor think the timing is off. Replace the sensor and see if that does it. You will then have to have the code cleared (erased) or the light will come back on/stay on.

Causes

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

• a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
• the camshaft position sensor may have failed
• the PCM may have failed
• there exists an open circuit
• the crankshaft position sensor may have failed, yes the crank sensor can set this code as well

With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

• Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
• Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
• Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
• Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
• Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
• Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
• Diagnose/replace the PCM as required
