Then you need a repair shop with experience,
as installing parts based on not diagnosing the codes,
doesn't fix much

I would think it would be just the Camshaft Position Sensor.I looked up the codes and they say pretty much the samething.

SOURCE: 1999 chrysler 300m wont crank, code P0340

Sounds like the timing belt broke. Unfortunately this vehicle was not equiped with no contact valves so if that is the case you will need to have the engine and Head rebuilt. If the crank position sensor can't sense the position of the crank it should shutdown the electrical to keep you from damaging your engine.

SOURCE: 3000gt trouble code p0340, p0335

Ive personally done time belt and water pump on a 94 3000gt and this is not a job for a rookie not saying you are but im just letting you know. These motors are ZERO interference motors and if the timing it out by one tooth buhbye valves. So if your not confident in yourself i wouldnt attempted doing this on your own. It is a long job especially in car. If your planning on changing the water pump put a new belt in the timing belt is the leading cause to failure in these engines so put a new belt you can get a kit that has all the pulleys. Now for the tensioner unless the car has lots of miles on it you wont hafta change the tensioner just remember to compress it properly. Other than that the first post was rite cam and crank have nothing to do with the water pump but keep in mind they are located at the front of the motor right where the timing belt/water pump job will be taking place so personally if you have the codes and if it was me doing the job id be doing the sensors at the same time. Also as i said before if the car has lots of miles on it your not that far from pulling the heads off so me id be doing head gasket and valve seals too that way you have a fresh motor thats good for another 100 plus thousand miles. Hope this is helpful

SOURCE: code reads P0340 Camshaft position Sensor circuit

That makes the computor think the timing is off. Replace the sensor and see if that does it. You will then have to have the code cleared (erased) or the light will come back on/stay on.

SOURCE: Code: P0340 Cam shaft position

Causes

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed, yes the crank sensor can set this code as well
Possible Solutions

With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

  • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

My 2002 pt cruiser died while I was driving first the oil light came on then it just died! I just had the oil changed 3 days prior to it dying some of the codes I received were 0340 1684 1685...

P0340 is cam position sensor. P1685 is for the key(has a chip in it) P1684 is battery has been disconnected. If the engine will still crank then codes P1684 & P1685 are probably old codes. So if the car will still crank, lets forget about those codes and focus on P0340 A bad cam position sensor will cause the engine to die and not allow it to start back up. Replace the cam position sensor and clear the code and the car should start up.

It cranks but it won't start. I got a new battery, cam position senor and crank position sensor. took out the ignition control was told that was still good.

Check for spark at the plug wires to spark plugs, no spark on anything, then suspect a fouled job replacing the cam position sensor.

I HAVE A 99 CHRYSLER LHS AND IT SHUT DOWN AT IDLE AND TOOK TIME TO START BUT IT DID AND RAN LIKE **** SO THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON P0340 CAME UP SO I CHANGED THE CAM SENSOR BUT CAR STILL RUN LIKE **** I...

Try clearing the code and also disconnect the battery for a couple min. I had a car that had this problem. It did the same thing when the cam sensor was changed. I disconnected the battery and made the ecu relearn.

Its worth a shot, my next thing would be to check the coils.

P0340 is for camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction so the problem can be in you hav already changed sensor, then you need to check wiring from sensor to ecu and if the wires are ok than check the ecu! It can be either of them cousing the problem.

Code p0340 need location on 2004 sebring 2.7 v6

P0340 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical Description
Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

What does that mean? This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
