Brake lights on '99 Expedition sporadically light up. It seems that the cable that goes into the switch assembly for the brake light is a little too kinked so if I attempt to move the cable over and take some of the kink out of the cable the brake lights work for awhile, until the cable goes back to the old position. Also, are those assemblies easy to replace. It seems you need a childs fingers to replace it.

"Those assemblies" change from often year to year and always model to model changes or differences. But just go ahead and rip into it, it's always easier the second time around-then you know what you are doing. What's the problem? When you break the little plastic pieces, then you have found its tensile strength.

I've seen only a few parts that are very difficult to replace. A lot are difficult to adjust correctly, but most are easy to replace.

I'm assuming all of the brake lights are on? If so there is a brake light switch located way up under the dash that hits on the arm for your brake pedal. If this is not "closed" when the pedal is up (not depressed), your brake lights will stay on. It is adjustable.

I Have a 99 expedition eddie bauer. My brake lights wont come on till i push the pedal almost to the floor. Can u tell me whether i need to replace the brake light switch.

I had a similar problem when I owned a 1997 Expedition. In my case, the brake light switch, mounted to the brake pedal arm, was faulty. My guess is that you have a similar problem. Pretty easy to replace... couple of wires and a clip as I recall.

Good luck.

'99 Expedition brake lights aren't turning on when pressing brake

It could be a number of things, the good news is that none of them are serious or expensive to fix.

The normal components that make up your brake circut are:

1. The brake light fuse (In the fuse box and labeled as such)
2. The brake light switch/relay - also called a stop light switch. It's under the dash, right behind the brake pedal arm. When you push the brake, it sends a signal to the lights which turns them on. Think of the dome light switch in the door jam of your truck. When you open the door, it releases the switch and your dome light pops on. Same thing with the brake light switch.
3. The bulbs in the tail lights and the 3rd brake light.
If none of them are working, it's most likely a fuse or the switch/relay under the dash. If it's the switch, it's a $12 part. Obviously fuses are only a couple bucks.
