Locating fuel filter on Jaguar XJ8 2000
The fuel filter is located above the rear axle on the driver's side. The easiest way to replace it is to break the fuel line nut loose on the side nearest the wheel and screw it all the way off (you may have a small amount of gasoline come out of the filter, so have a container handy). Then break the fuel line nut loose on the inlet side (farthest away from the wheel well) by using your wrench to turn the entire fuel filter using the nut that is part of the filter on the side nearest the wheel well. Reinstalling the filter is just the reverse of this procedure. Be sure to check that the O-rings inside the nuts are good and don't overtighten the filter or you might cut the O-rings and the filter connections will leak

Really not a way to tell if the filter is bad. How long have you had the car? Have you ever had it changed? Do you hear the fuel pump "whirrll" when you turn the key? Depending on how big of a pain in the **** it is to change you may want to change it anyway. If you can not hear a noise from the back of the car when you first turn the key to start the car then the pump is the issue.
