The steering wheel keeps "migrating" counter-clockwise and the ability to turn left is decreasing while ability to turn right is increasing....

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2009

Turns out there is a "sleeve" that connects a threaded shaft from the steering arm to the mechanism that pushes and pulls the steering linkage. The sleeve was rotating because it was not tightened at the clamps at both ends. I had to rotate the sleeve to get the steering corrected. It DID NOT alter the alignment. I really appreciate the offering of help and support the readers of this site have made. It is very important to at least try to help when you can. Thank you thundergod!!

I had no intentions of marring your reputation. It would seem that you have a very strong understanding of automotive mechanics and your advice should very well be considered by anyone getting it. Although I was able to solve the problem, I will no doubt use this site and anyone willing to give the two cents needed to come up with a good diagnosis! Kudos to you my automotive friend! I have changed my rating out of respect for you!! :)

Likely there's a sticking valve in the steering unit...try changing oil, or steering box will need to be replaced or serviced (rebuilt) I've used lucas conditioner with some success on these. (depends on how bad it is...sometimes takes a few days to work though)

OK...my diagnosis was incorrect...but not inapropriate...Inapropriate would be if I had asked you if you had checked the radio. It is sometimes difficult to determine exactly whats going on with a vehicle I can't see or drive, till several questions are asked and answered. If you check my rating, you will see that I maintain a fairly decent one because I really care about what i do and try as best I can to impart my knowledge for free to people who really need it.
Please reconsider your rating. .The enjoyment of having and maintaining a good one is all I get from this!!!

Thanks...when I read my reviews it seems for the most part the few bad ones (7 of over 1000) are that some people get angry when I tell them something they don't want to hear...not in your case though...I was just incorrect. Even while in the business, sometimes you begin with an incorrect idea, but after testing etc, something tells you something different. Here, I can't do that...makes it tough sometimes!!! Glad you figured out waht was wrong. However...Sure there was no alignment (toe in) change? Just keep an eye on tires for a while to be sure!!!

Where is the idle screw

Look at where the throttle cables attach to the throttle plate. ON the bottom side of the throttle plate there is a screws that it rest on when in closed position. You turn it clockwise to increase throttle and counter-clockwise to decrease.

I have a 97 taurs with a steering problem. It makes a humming noise that gets louder the faster I go. It pulls to the right, an when I go around a left corner it feels like it just doesn't want to turn...

check to see if you have power steering fluid. if your low fill it up. (most cases thats all it is) check around for any leaks or parts to the power steering unit for and damage (hoses, pump, rer, rack and pinion, any seals or such. you might have a leak somewhere. when your looking for leaks fill the res up with power steering fluid. turn the car on. and have someone turn the wheel so get the fluid to build up pressure in the system.

1994 K1500- key will not turn to start truck, will turn to acc., but not start position

Two possibile solutions:

1. Steering wheel may be "binding" the ignition switch. Turn the steering wheel slightly either clockwise or counter-clockwise while turning the key.
2.Use different key or "flip" your key.

Hope this helps!

REPLACING LEFT TIE RODS

Genreally speaking the outter tie rod is only worn. The inner connection to the rack is more of a coupling than a rod end. You will need a 22 mm openend wrench and probally a 16mm and a 18mm opened wrench. A set of pliers to remove the old and bend the new cotterpin. Remove wheel cover and loosen the wheel nuts. Jack up the car and place jack stand or wood blocking, (or as a minimum place the wheel you removed) under the car to prevent the car from falling on you while it's in the air. Do not rely on the jack to keep the car up. Cars are heavy. remove wheel Loosen jam nut that locks the tie rod end to the connecting rod of the steering rack, spray adjustment treads with penetetrating oil to help it spin free. You may have to lock the adjustable shaft by the placing wrench on the hex portion of the shaft just inwards of the tread. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end. Remove nut. Take hammer and drive the tie rod from the steering knuckle. To help with the alignment of the front wheel try not to move the the steering knucle brake assembly. Unscrew the tie rod , lubricate the tread and in stall the new one. adjust the treads so that the tie rod slides back into the steering knuckle without turning the knuckle. Install the tie rod nut, tighten and secure with new cotterpin. Do not tightnen the jam nut that locks the tie rod nut to the inner adjustment rod for the steering rack, instead place the wheel back on the car, lower car and finish tightnen. with the car lowered, position the car steering wheel straight. Look at right side wheel. You should be able to line the the edges of the front wheel with your eye's with the outside edge of the rear wheel. if this doesn't line up check steering wheel postion. Now after seeing what the wheel alaignment looks like on the right side, go to the left side. If you look along the outside of the left ire and you see the tread of the rear tire , you have to muckh toe out. Lenghten the adjustmne t rod by turning it clockwise. If when you look along the edge of the tire and you don't see the rear tire, turn the rod counter clockwise. Adjust slowly and always check that the steering wheel is in the straight position. Once you have it fairly close to straight, lock the jam nut on the tie rod and take to a wheel alignment company for finishing adjustment. Good luck.

"Humming" or "bearing" type noise in left front at highway speeds

That's a hub bearing. Replace the one that's doing it. I'm assuming this 'roar' is coming from the front, NOT the rear.

Car alarm

The shock sensor needs to be adjusted. Its too sensitive. There is small box mounted next to the alarm(brain/box) it has a small flat head screw on it, turn clockwise to increase sensitivity and counter clockwise to decrease. Good Luck
