Question about 1997 Land Rover Discovery
The owner's manual for your Discovery clearly states that this is a design feature to keep you from locking the keys in the vehicle. The doors must be locked with either the remote keyless entry transmitter, or with the key itself.

I had a 1991 Nissan Maxima with the same problem. It turned out to be the design of this vehicle so that the keys would not be accidently locked in.Lock the door then hold the door handle or button as if to open the door then close and see if this works. If this doesnt work then try to isolate the problem to certain doors.See if this happens when you close the back doors as well as the front(driver/passenger?).If you can isolate it to a certain door and the door handle technique does not work then it may be a loose wire or a malfunction on the auto lock system.
