1988 tbi 350 pulled distr out to find marks are gone! Now what?

  • Mike Mccrea Aug 28, 2013

In the process of a tune up the small screw on distr broke had to remove. The book says to line up a predrilled hole on the lower gear with a paint mark, but that is gone. I have done the TDC dropped dirt in pointing to #1 cyl but sill not right!"

What marks?

If you haven't moved the crank- stab the dist back in there,
until you like where #1 Points on the cap

If you moved the crank, bring it up #1 toTDC on compression
stroke

SOURCE: low power when accelerating

I thought the filter might be the issue here, on carb cars the engine tends to stall out with a plugged filter.

SOURCE: Where is the fuel regulator located on a 1988 tbi

No, low fuel pressure is caused by a weak fuel pump.
High fuel pressure is caused by a faulty fuel regulator.

Have 1988 tbi chevy 350 pulled the distributor out only to find out the marks are gone, now what?

Retime it. Put #1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Pull number one spark plug: with finger over hole turn the crank with a socket and feel for the pressure buildup as engine turns. When you feel pressure, that means number one piston is rising on it's compression stroke. Now turn the crank on around until it is lining up the zero mark on the pointer scale. TDC of compression stroke.
Now put the distributor in so that the rotor when installed is pointing to the number one spark plug tower. Distributor shaft will turn slightly as it is installed, so start with shaft and rotor turned a bit back, so when slides into position, rotor is pointing directly to #1 plug tower. Keep playing with it until you get it right.
Good luck.

I have a 88 chevy 4x4 with sb 350 tbi. i want to swap 350 block with a 400 block ( keep the 350 heads and tbi system just swap the block). i know i must bore the steam holes but thats all i know i must do....

a full decking of heads, as well as refurbishing at a head shop is most likely necessary, new head bolts, head gaskets, as well as checking the valve/piston clearance.make sure the coolant holes are properly cleaned out, and this could be a good time to port and polish the heads

Where is the fuel regulator located on a 1988 tbi

Sits inside the throttle body, you would have to open to install regulator. Also check your fuel filter make sure it's not clog, fuel filter is under truck on fram rail, while your there do a fuel pressure test, with a fuel pressure tester, should have 13psi.

My 89 chevy is making a knocking sound i just replaced lifters, push rods rocker arms timing chain and gears cam and valve springs and umbrella seals. i have no clue what it could be except mabe the timing

Did you check the knock sensor located on the passenger side of the block, behind the starter, The sensor can be bad sending a signal to the Computer causing the computer to readjust the spark advanced timing causing Knocking and pinging....... or it could be as simple as bad gas. If you changed the timing chain, the gears should both be set with the the timing marks at 12 oclock for the 89 chevy K1500 5.7 350 V8 TBI OHV 16V if you set the timing at 12 oclock on the cam and 6 oclock for the valve and Distr. the number 6 is firing as number 1 you can recheck by bringing the No. 1 piston back up to TDC and check to see if your Distr. is pointing to the No. 1 Plug Hope this helps
