Speedometer and Tachometer not working

I just bought a 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, and the speedometer and tachometer do not work. The odometer, gas guage, oil pressure guage, and voltage meter all work, as do all of the dashboard lights. Are the two related to the same cable, and will replacing the speedometer cable also fix the tach problem?

Ok.....I found it on the tranny housing, removed it, and nobody can test it to see if it works or not. I did not want to buy the new part without knowing if that was the problem. I went to put it back together, and I noticed a white, plastic gear laying inside of the tranny housing. It obviosuly is supposed to be connected to the speed sensor. It is shaped like a cone, with the gear portion being on the largest portion....I am wondering if anyone knows how it is supposed to be placed on the shaft of the speed sensor.

    I will attempt to illustrate.....

The gear is shaped kid of like this >:

Should it go on the shaft in this perspective ---> or this ---
The gear would be on the shaft and placed back inside of the tranny housing, but I can not see what drives the gear inside of the transmission, and I do not know which way the gear is supposed to go on the shaft of the speed sensor. Any help would be appreciated.

ok.....that is the way that I put it back in. The gear looked fine when I inspected it. You understand that the gear is on the largest portion of the cone....so if it were like this -->, the gear would be on the open end of that shape. I am wondering if you know, is that the main speed sensor, or are there more than 1? I know there are 4 ABS speed sensors located on the wheel hubs. Removing the sensor and putting it back in place did not fix the problem. What drives the sensor gear inside the transmission? I was unable to see anything in there that it connected to. The vehicle has A/C, so I would need to remove vents to see if it is loose at the guage. I do not know how I could test this sensor, as I have taken it to all of the parts stores and even the dealership and nobody can test it for me. I am hesitant to buy a new sensor, when I do not know for sure what the problem is. Thanks for your help.

Check the vehicle speed sensor located on the transmission housing.

this gear should be connected to your sensor. it would go in this way -> Itrans. it not being connected is probably the problem. you can get one in the salvage yard alot cheaper than you can at the dealer or parts shop. they run around 100 or more i believe.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.
