By lights, you mean also the dash gauges and warning lights on the dash all come on when you turn the key to on and then start?
If dash doesn't turn on, then problem is in the ignition switch. If it does turn on normally, the problem is in the start circuit between the key switch and the starter solenoid on the starter motor.
You have a 1998 GMC model? Envoy I think is a later year, starting in 2002. But anyway, a GMC will have an under hood fuse block with possibly as many as 3 or 4 fuses as part of the start circuit. And probably a relay in there as well, but you should start by checking all the fuses in that fuse block. One is a 40 amp fuse for the key switch, one is a 10 amp (so a red fuse) called a "Crank" fuse. And one or two others, maybe another 10amp fuse. If all the fuses are good, you will need a voltmeter or multi-meter-cause you have to get at the starter and see if there is power on the small purple wire to the starter solenoid with key held in start. There probably is not, it is just to verify no power there, so the problem is in the wiring of the start circuit, and not the starter motor or starter solenoid. Of course, if it does have power on the purple wire with key in start-then you know the starter has to come off for testing the motor and the solenoid.
At this point you may go find a wiring diagram for your vehicle and get ready to use the multi-meter for testing, or seek professional help. I don't know what leaving the door open had to do with it, if anything. It's probably a simple fix, so good luck.
SOURCE: 2002 GMC ENVOY GARAGE DOOR OPENER
You have a quick fix item. There is a send code button on your garage door opener. You simply have to press that button, and within 5 secs, press and hold the button on the garage door opener (your car or other) until the opener rapidly blinks. The garage door and the opener will share info,,, and presto,, you can open by the remote opener. Take a peek at your garage door opener instructions. You can have up to three settings at one time... one for each button. I was asked if the buttons ever got the openers mixed up,, and the answer is absolutely not.
SOURCE: replace starter on 2002 GMC Envoy SLT
check to see if the starter itself is getting a signal to crank. youll need to use a test light and have someone else try to start the vehicle, while you probe the wire to the starter to see if it is getting power. if not, check the starter fuse to make sure its not blown, as well as the starter relay to make sure that is good too (very common on gm's for bad relays) if the fuse and relay are good, but your not getting signal, it is an ignition switch problem.

If your 2002 gmc envoy or sierra will not even turn over with a kown good battery try starting it in nuetral then go back to park and try starting again. There is a park nuetral safety switch that can malfunction. Turn the key on then shift into nuetral, then turn fully to start.
