ABS/Brake light comes on each time I drive and reach 40+ mph for say 20 - 30 seconds. Code said "erratic rear speed sensor". Located and changed the speed sensor on top of rear differential and no change, still get the same ABS/Brake light on dash. Speedometer works fine as do all gauges, but did notice that the cruise control is acting up. It won't hold a steady speed and fluctuates slightly. Figure these two problems are associated with one another. Friend told me that there is another speed sensor on the tranny somewhere and that it may be the one that actually needs changing. Any help would be appreciated.

well because the abs light indicates a problem with your anti-lock braking system you need to find out why it is on.... keep in mind one quick way you would disengage your cruise is with the brake pedal.
under the hood is a fuse panel (often located near the battery) ... see if there is a relay in the for your cruise... replace that.

The brake and ABS light both come on when you are receiving no speed signal. Most likely the speed sensor in the top of the rearend is bad.

SOURCE: Speedometer won't work

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BROKEN WIRE LEADING TO SPEED SENSOR IN REAR DIFF..CHECK FOR ANY SPOTS IN HARNESS WHERE IT LOOKS OUT OF PLACE OR RUBBING ON SOMETHING..ALSO CHECK FOR SPREAD CONNECTIONS IN PLUG AT SENSOR..CHECK ALL FUSES RELATED TO ABS SYSTEM IN UNDERHOOD FUSE/RELAY CENTER

SOURCE: ABS light & brake light on, problems with speedo working properly

The rear wheel speed sensor is the most common problem on those trucks and will do what you are talking about. It is located at the top of the rear axle in the center. It picks up it's signal from a tone ring on the diff inside! If a tranny input or output sensor is bad then the tranny won't shift properly!

Abs light brake light on not shifting

look under the truck at the ****** and check the wiring to the sensors if good may be a bad sensor, also check the wiring and connections to the abs wheel sensors [ located from frame to the hub behind the rotors ] the abs also acts as speed sensor if problem was with an abs sensor at the[ hub] wheel usually set the brake system to normal power brakes [if u hit brakes hard will lock up or skid wheels] with the abs light coming on if the speed sensor at ****** malfunction can and usually causes shift problems

Abs light and brake light came on wont turn back off

There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!
I second the second answer :) My ABS light was on, my BRAKE light was on, my CHECK ENGINE light was on, my SPEEDOMETER wouldn't work below 35 mph, then quit working alltogether. Once the speedomenter quit working the odometer and cruise control quit working. I replaced the rear differential mounted speed sensor ($33) and then reset the CHECK ENGINE light by disconnecting the positive battery cable for a couple of minutes. EVERYTHING then worked.
Replace rear differential speed sensor as follows:
a) remove parking brake cable bracket (1/2" socket)
b) remove speed sensor bolt (9/16" deep socket)
c) remove metal speed sensor cover
d) remove speed sensor from rear differential housing (use channel lock pliers, twist gently back and forth while applying upward pressure. Once the speed sensor has a small gap between it and the rear differential housing, insert a flat-blade screwdriver and gently apply upward pressure while gently twisting speed sensor back and forth.
e) disconnect speed sensor from speed sensor cable
f) lubricate new sensor with WD-40, insert into rear differential housing. It will NOT go in all the way by hand, so do NOT force it nor hit it with anything made out of metal.
g) replace metal speed sensor cover
h) Insert speed sensor bolt and tighten LIGHTLY until a small amout of pressure is felt. Tap speed sensor with rubber hammer until it pops into housing. Finish tightening of speed sensor bolt.
i) replace brake cable bracket, replace 1/2" nut and tighten
j) disconnect positive battery cable for 2 minutes, reconnect positive battery cable
h) start vehicle, enjoy,

2004 focus brake & ABS light on

Ok the reason I ask is that will help to pinpoint the concern. See ABS system when you first turn the ignition on will do a self test on itself, light turns on for a few seconds then turns off if everything proves out. Then when you start driving once you reach about 12 mph it will activate the pump and perform a 2nd self test.If everything is ok light stays off,if it see's a problem it turns on the light and disables the ABS.
Since yours comes on after you start driving then problem is most likely a wheel speed sensor concern. Since you just did a rear brake job and the problem started after this I would say it is one of the rear sensors. You need to look at the sensors and make sure the sensor and ring look ok and that you didn't get grease or dirt in the teeth of the sensor ring or maybe bent the end of one of the sensors and make the gap larger between sensor and ring.

Abs light wont go out

When u power up the vehicle ABS does a self test(light stays on a few seconds then cuts off) and if it see's a problem will shut off and illuminate the ABS lamp. It will also do a second test on iself when you reach a speed of around 12-15 mph,it will run the pump for a few seconds to check pressure and look at the speed sensors,if it see a problem here it will again shut down and illuminate the ABS light.
Now if the red brake lamp is on then it will shut down because it thinks you have a hydraulic concern and will not try and run ABS if this is the case.
If red brake lamp is on most likely if you have good brakes it is a problem with the float sensor in the master cylinder reservior, maybe its bad or just stuck,or just low on fluid.

Erratic speedometer with ABS and brakelight lit

same problem here, found 3 places that say it is the abs sensor:

Had this problem with my 1999 Ram 1500. There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. The fix for your truck is the ABS speed sensor located in the top of the differential housing , held in with one stud . Your speedometer is calculated through the ABS controller. Replacing that sensor will fix your problem.

My check engine light is on, my speedometer do not work, my ABS light and Brake light is on. My check engine, ABS and brake lights stay on all the time and my speedo does'nt work.

Speed sensor located in top of rear diff is probably bad, It sends a signal to abs module for abs, it also is used by pcm and cluster for vehicle speed.Sometimes rear diff mechanical problem can damage the sensor. Trans sensors have nothing to do with speedo or abs light.
