Blown Fuses - Dead 1998 Ford Escort

YESTERDAY I purchased a 1998 Ford Escort SE with 75k miles (after paying a mechanic to look over car, and he found no problems except a small crack in the motor mount and a gasket that needed replaced). After driving approximately 20 miles, my car sputtered and died. (Am I unlucky, or what?) A (different) mechanic looked & said that the fuel pump fuse was blown. We installed a new 20 amp replacement fuse as specified on the fuse box cover (fuse box under hood on driver's side). I drove about 5 miles home. This morning, the car started up but within 5 seconds it sputtered and died. Another blown fuse. The mechanic I called checked his computer & said that this should be a 30 amp fuse, which I then installed. The car started & I drove about 15 miles and stopped somewhere. Got back in the car, started the car and, after driving for 10 seconds, the 30 amp fuse blew and the car died. I installed my last fuse, a 20 amp, trying to get the car back in my driveway, but that fuse blew 2 seconds after starting the car. Now the mechanic says I need a new fuel pump, at a cost of $280. I could barely afford to buy this car, so please help me figure out what to do next. REALLY, REALLY appreciate any advice anyone can give me!!!

Try changing the fuel filter first we always change them when servicing the fuel pump anyway, its easy and cheap,if that doesnt solve the problem you will have to perform an amperage draw test on the fuel pump to insure your not replacing a good pump. Check the fuel pump relay and inertia switch and wiring also.Although possible its unlikley the fuel pump would blow a fuse consistantly without displaying any driveability problems. There may also be another component running off the fuel pump fuse have your mechanic pull a wiring diagram to find out. Good hunting keep me informed

Timing belt jumped... why?

This can be caused by not tensioning the belt corectly. When fitting a new belt you should allways replace the tensioner, and make sure the water pump pulley is in good working order. Its always wise to get your timming belt from the dealer.as others are nown to be faulty.Fit new belt follow manuel when doing so.good luck
