Check all the air intake pipes, check for splits, cracks, holes or disconnected pipes, there could be excessive air getting in which will mean the car will stall when idling and not start properly.

Vw golf engine

If the vehicle runs smoothly idling (at least 30 mins in Park) I would head directly to the ignition switch, then battery wiring harness.

Vw golf mark4 over revs

Hello James,

If the engine revs up with no increase in speed, your clutch is slipping. Probably the reason the car was sold!

My car wont start

if it starts and cuts out straight away. it is most likely an immobilizer problem. an electronic diagnostic test would pin point the problem as it would store afault in the memory.

Mk4 gti 1.8t cut out

it might be the e break sensor . ive heard of them causing shut downs . also check all fluid levels if your coolant is too low the sensor will shut it down lol. and i think theres a break light recall that might have something to do with it . take it in to vw if you have the means for a scan . of find someone in your area with a vag com . it can read the error codes from the computer . good luck
