Its a common issue that once the low forward band in ford transmissions wear out that it will engage first and 2nd at the same time. of course this is not mechanically possible and the car stalls out.

your fix is to replace the transmission

How do I fix the transmission problem? The car is moving forward at neutral, drive and low gear, and switching to parking mode at reverse and parking. The car is not backing up at all.

Transmission may now be toast since you continued to drive it when maybe low on fluid or torque converter had failed. How long since last fluid and filter change? Ever?

Sounds like one or both of your universal joins is going bad... Is your mountaineer a 4wd, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

The transmission solenoids are not working properly. Probably requires a transmission rebuild.
I don't think it's in the ground strap or wiring.
It's an internal problem with the transmission.

99 Mercury Cougar has reverse but no forward gears

check the oil lever in the transmisson assuming it's automatic, if the fluid level is fine then with it in gear running and the brake on look to see if the drive shaft is turning, if it is then you have a prboblem with the drive shavft depending on engine size and wheather it's front or rear wheel drive. if it's not turning then you have a transmisson problem. If this is helpful please rate.

REAR WHEELS LOCKED UP

Your brakes have seized. Remove the wheels and inspect. A firm blow with a rubber mallet to the calliper or a little penetrating oil may free them up, but not adviseable to drive until looked at after freeing up.
