Re-filling tranny fluid in a 2005 Chevy Malibu

Usually you don't have to remove that part. Just the pan.

GET NEW GASKET AND FILTER FOR TRANNY ALONG WITH THE FLUID (BEFORE YOU BEGINE)
GET A LARGE FLAT DRAIN PAN.
PUT CAR UP ON 4 JACK STANDS.
place drain pan under tranny pan.
undo tranny pan screws - allow one corner to hang lower than the other corner (to allow fluid to drain) slowly remove them all.
Its messy! empty tranny pan into drain pan. set tranny pan to the side. undo the filter clamp, carefully remove the filter - set into the drain pan, remove the gasket around the tranny body/tranny pan.
Clean tranny block surface with clean cloth. install new filter, install clamp tightly. Clean tranny pan, place gasket onto pan and then reinstall tranny pan. (this only change the fluid in the tranny body and pan) If you wan the fluid out of the torque convertor you have pull the pan under the torque convertor and turn the convertor so you can get at the drain plug. Allow fluid to drain into drain pan. Reinstall drain plug and pan. (you will need a lot of fluid) Check manual for qty. Place car back on to ground/floor. Refill tranny through filler tube. Do not start the engine until oil is at full mark, and when you do start it do not all it to run for than 4 minutes - stop and add more fluid and check full mark again (repeat until no longer sinks below full mark. gently test drive around you block -- come back and check level while engine running. Top up if needed.
Siphon out excess above full mark. Test drive around 3 block,
come back check full mark. Because the torque convertor was emptied it can take a while to get all the air out it.

• When you change a transmission filter the general rule is you loos roughly 1/4 - 1/3 of your total transmission fluid capacity.
• I would buy 3 quarts and dump two in the transmission after the filter/gasket change. Put your foot on the brake and go through the gears to fill the pockets in the transmission up. Then put then check the fluid and add some more as necessary. Should be around 2 1/2 quarts total you will loose in the filter change.

There is no dipstick on this tranny (4T40E). On the passenger side of the tranny just beside the output axle seal, there is an 11mm 7/16" bolt head. With the vehicle running in park remove the bolt. If tranny fluid runs out it was over filled. On the top Drivers side of tranny, there is a red plastic cap (marked vent). Remove and add fluid here if low. Once the fluid runs out of bolt hole its at correct level. To do tranny fluid and filter change, loosen off all the pan bolts, drain. Filter is located under pan. Do not remove the bolt with engine off, it will lower the tranny fluid level. Fill with approximately 6.5 qts or lts. Start engine, remove bolt, let run out, when it quits its full. This doesn't change all 16qts ( the torque converter and valve body hold 8 or more), if you want complete change, get it flushed at a shop. It doesn't have a speedo cable anymore either. It has VSS's (vehicle speed sensors) in the tranny and also use wheel speed sensors in the ABS system to calculate speed for different systems. ABS, Cluster, Cruise control, Tranny shifting etc.

remove the drain plug and measure the amount of fluid that u have drained out of the pan, remove the tranny pan and change the filter the pan has a reusable gasket wipe it off and reinstall the pan,i found it easy to fill the tranny pan halfway up before you put it back on,let the engine run until it get to operating temperature.in the center of the drain plug you removed theres a small star head plug in the middle of it remove the plug this is your fill plug you can use a fluid exchanger to fill the tranny while its running just be patient and if you measured the old fluid that u drained youll know very close to how much youll have to put back in just remember theres no level indicator so you need to put back what u drain out if you need any help let me know

Your gonna have to get under the car and find the bolt thats on the transmission on the driver side take it out while car is running and if any fluid comes out like a trickle its full. If not I believe to fill look under the hood and should have a red cap I believe the cap is somewhere under the brake master cylinder

You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

in order to change the fluid it's best to take it to a quick lube place like pep boys or grease monkey. you can drop the transmission pan and change the filter and replace the fluid that is lost,however there will still be old fluid left in the torque converter. now if you have a manual transmission it is a sealed unit and has not torque convertter or a filter but has a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the side of the case. at a lube shop they hook up lines to the transmission lines and cycle out all the old fluid and replace it completely this is your best bet the whole job includes new fluid,filter,and labor it cost about 80 dollars

IT SHOULD TAKE 4 QTS., BUT PUT IN 3 THEN CHECK THE DIPSTICK HOT RUNNING IN NEUTRAL. GOOD LUCK.
