1996 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor makes a popping noise

I have a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I had to replace the alternator day after purchase. Yesterday when I stepped down on gas pedal the car made a loud popping noise and hesitated (liked the car coughed) it ran a little rough after that point. This morning the check engine light came on. Any ideas on cost for repair as well?

what are obd codes? I just no that when I stepped down on the gas pedal the car didn't speed up it sounded like a backfire (pop) and hesitated then ran rough for alittle bit. Maybe spark plug issues?

go to an autozone and ask for a OBD2 code forward me that code and i will tell you . i work for jim click ford in tucson, az

You must hook a OBD scanner up to the OBD port on your car. this readt the fault codes your CEL is telling you are present.

Any autoparts store will do it for free... PepBoys, Murrays, AutoZone etc.

Well my first thought is timing. Some component is off. Chain or belt has jumped. Distributor has moved. ECM or one of its sensors are faulty. That is just for starters. OBD code would be a first step. Do you have a scan tool? Get the car to a auto parts store that will do it for you if not.

SOURCE: 1996 crown victoria has no heat

i think it is the heater control valve i think it is mounted on the firewall by the top close to the hood it will have two black 5/8 hoses attached to it check and make sure it still has the cable attached to it before you replace

good luck here is the (how to) for your car

The heater control valve (sometimes called the water flow valve)controls the flow of coolant into the heater core from the engine.
Heater control valves are operated in three basic ways: by cable, thermostat, or vacuum. Cable-operated valves are controlled directlyfrom the heater control lever on the dashboard.
f48-04_3184.gifCable-operated heater valve used to control the flow of water or coolant through the heater core.Thermostatically controlled valves feature a liquid-filled capillarytube located in the discharge air stream off the heater core thatsenses air temperature and modulates the flow of water to maintain aconstant temperature regardless of engine speed or temperature. Mostheater valves utilized on today's car are vacuum operated. These valvesare normally located in the heater hose line or mounted directly in theengine block.
To replace a heater control valve:

  • Refer to your vehicle's service manual to locate the valve.
  • Drain or lower the fluid level in the cooling system.
  • Unclamp, unbolt and unplug the valve.
  • Reverse procedures to complete installation.
CAUTION
Identify the heater control valve carefully. It is easily confused with other parts.

SOURCE: cylinder 4 misfire on a 2000 crown victoria interceptor

first cylinder 4 is the last on the passenger side . first pull the coil out and check if there is water where the plug is. if there is take the water out and dry up the coil. if you find water you got a crack manifold or a bad intake manifold gasket. if there is no water replace the coil. good luck

Water pump failed. Car overheated. Engine lost power. Car smoke out from back of engine and from rear of car. I replaced water pump. Car still smokes when I drive it. Still has no power.

Notorious for intake leaks, the composite plastic intakes crack and leak coolant-as to the lack of power, you mght have overheated it and done some damage to the engine. There was a recall (information below) for the 4.6 for the intake-the overheating and lack of power means you should at least have compression checked and go from there-you may have bad head gaskets or worse. Do a compression test before you do anything else.

Ford Motor Company will extend the recall (01M02) on 4.6L V8 equipped vehicles with plastic intake manifolds. Some of the composite intake manifolds used on 4.6L SOHC engines may develop fatigue cracks at the coolant crossover duct. This condition could result in engine coolant leakage which, if not serviced, may cause engine overheating. Complete loss of coolant may result in engine damage or engine failure.
The updated recall now includes:
• Certain 1996 through 2001 Model Year Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
• Certain 1998 through 2001 Model Year Crown Victoria with Taxi
• Certain 1998 through 2001 Lincoln Town Car Limousine and Livery Prep Package
• Certain 1996-2001 Crown Victoria Taxis, Police cars and Lincoln Town Car Limousine and Livery cars.
• Certain 1996 through 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Vehicles with 4.6L SOHC engines built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant from the beginning of production for the 1996 Model Year through January 28, 1997.
• Certain 1998 through 2001 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Vehicles with 4.6L SOHC engines built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant from November 22, 1997 through December 15, 2000.
• Certain 1998 through 2001 Crown Victoria Taxi Vehicles with 4.6L SOHC engines built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant from November 22, 1997 through December 15, 2000.
• Certain 1998 through 2001 Lincoln Town Car Limousine Prep Package and Livery Vehicles with 4.6L SOHC engines built at the Wixom Assembly Plant from November 22, 1997 through December 15, 2000.
