I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to jump these old vw's, but found out only after doing so when the battery was dead one day. It fries a relay or something. The engine will turn over but doesn't seem to spark. Now it will only start if i spray a bit of starter fluid in before turning it over. After letting the engine warm up for a bit i've tried to turn it off and immeditely trying to restart it will not fire. any insight you could give would be most helpful. thanks
I believe you have a problem with your fuel pump relay... it is a "double" type.. one side energizes the pump while key is in "start" position, the other side is for "run"... the start side of the relay is not working, hence once you get it to fire with a squirt of ether or fuel and return the key to "run", it will run, but will not restart. Replace the relay... (they are kinda spendy...)

does it have points or module ???if points then i think they need re setting ,gap 20th also check for wear on distributor shaft ..try moving the rotor arm sideways ?? if worn then close points gap accordingly and dont forget to grease the cam
try to change sparkplugs and wires.
