I have a 3.5 V6 Infiniti I35 2002 and it runs great. No problems with the car at all. It is at 109000 miles right now and I have not got the timing belt replaced yet. The dealer recommends change of timing belt at 90000 or 120000 (Iam not sure). Some mechanics say changing at 90000 is good. I am not sure whether I should get it done at 120000 and get it over with. I want to avoid a situation in future where my timing belt breaks suddenly and I am stranded in the middle of nowhere. Please advise what is the right time or mileage to change the timing belt of this car. Also, I have heard its an expensive thing to do. Dealers can charge more than $1000 sometimes. Do you recommend that we get it done by a local mechanic and save some money. Or do you think that repair by dealer is a safe thing to do. Please advise.
I35's do not have timing belts. They have timing chains and do not need to be replaced. The only Infiniti vehicles with timing belts are the J30 and the QX4. So whoever told you that you had a belt doesn't know what they are talking about.
Dont have to replace timing chain unless it breaks.
Now is time to do the job. manfcuture suggested time frame is only that.
I would change it while it is still working. Since you already past the minimum 90K mark. (usually 90K)
I would go to the dealer. I would have local repair shop for anything else, but not time belt. everything is running off the timeing. better do it right than redo it later. (that is going to cost you more).
the cost for the the timing belt, water pump run you about $1500. Local repair shop may not be any cheaper.
I have Infinity 2001 I-35, want to know if I need to change the timing belt when reach 80000 miles?
I don't like running any belt over 60K 80 at most...Seen too many failures above that miles.
A competent tech is not more competent if a dealership roof is over his head. (same goes for bad ones)...If you have an independent shop you know and are comfortable with, use them. Stay away from chain store shops...They tend to employ people with less experience than other places. (the "good guys" require higher pay).
Replacing a non-failed belt is far easier than one that has broken...index marks are usually lined up properly and nothing has been disturbed.
You have gotten good service from your belt. Presently, service is not an emergency but I would not let it go too much longer.
good luck
J30 have timming chains....if u let it break the cost of repair is trippled!!! Change it b4 u roll over 100,000 miles...advice to live by if u love n want your infiniti to last!!!
