Charge and load test your battery. If it was connected to your vehicles electrical system, it was subject to low draw : clock, etc for the entire four years. It likely is bad. To get the rear brakes working you will likely need to remove both rear drums, give brakes a quick cleanup and put the drums back on. I've seen this before and I believe that the linings swell just enough to cause them to bind. Usually they will work just fine after cleanup.
Hood latch is a bit tricky. Pull on the release lever and have someone bounce the leading edge of the hood. generally this will free up the latch. You can also try to spray a bunch of solvent up at the latch from wherever you can...It makes a mess but it will help. The only real connection between all your problems is that the entire vehicle was stored for four years. Once you overcome the problems at hand, change the oil and antifreeze before using it. Also, check any fuel remaining in tank. If over half full, remove it and replace. Fuel goes "dead" after less than three months...You are definitely over that limit.
good luck

Holden astra 2004-2005 need to get it into neutral.

all cars made with A/T box, M/T is child play
the manual for your car now lost from glove box.
it has a tow page
and on said page of all cars made is the super secret park lockout
bypass button near the shifter,
it even works dead car main battery, ,cool or what ?
no such cars here USA or would read it to you.
google for the book, in AUSTRALIA<> is it?

park lockout blocks shifting out of park foot off brake pedal.
so some folks dont drive over the kids
but takes good battery and key on, and brake lamps working
if not the secret bypass is in the users guide.
on some cars a slot is at shift console to put key there and unlock it
others have small plastic window there that slides or pops open
and a lever to push. all tow trucks here know what to do.
even jumper cables 12v power , the battery to get power,
and key on, hit brakes and shift to neutral.
there did i get them all.
with zero manuals USA for any Holden on earth

How to disengage Park into neutral to push/tow van

sure you can the operator guide on all cars glove box there.
shows park neutral lock out.
Key on, step on brake key on, shift to neutral. (battery not dead)
do not tow it with steering lock enabled. that be horrible.
all cars have a chapter on towing,
wheels up or down front or rear up or down or flat towed

and with RWD and wheels on ground rear, the towing distance is limited to 200 miles or less. so when the rear transmission bearing runs dry and not burns up, < all you need to know there!
most transmissions made (not my 64 Pontiac rotohydramatic)
has the 200 mile limit, the transmission has no rear tail shaft pump now days, ALL TOW shops know all this stuff.
Same with 4wd and same reasons
my Jeep i can tow it 200miles, called flat towing but must stop and start engine every 200miles to add lube to the rear.(tranny shafts)
flat towing is the hard job and I bet you meant flat towed.
and hope only short distance,

lost the key?
battery dead Not told?
best is leave key turned on , hold foot brake, shift to N and then key off but do not set the steering lock ever. (pause and think now)
for some jobs (ask U-hual) they have a bar the locks the steering to FRONT, hard locked, so cars KEY lock can not engage.. towed.
if battery is dead ,jump it. then go to neutral
some cars vast the same manual
shows how to defeat the P/.N lock with a secret part of the shifter console we push that, and P/N is defeated just for towing.
we have no Iveco 3.5 ton curtain sider , in USA
nor any year told
ask the make for the manual on your car in YOUR country
"Today it is marketed in 110 markets around the world" but not USA

"Volvo s40 will not shift out of park or start"

You might make sure that the transmission is in park. Sounds like the shifter interlock might be engaged. The tow company might have taken the trans out of park for the tow?

The simplest things can cause the most trouble - I would start with a load test on the battery - may seem to be charged after using a battery charger, but can have plate connection problems causing failure under load.

1998 GMC Z71 Drivers side rear wheel lockedd up in drive, but ok in reverse?

No different than a car you park for a couple months

You have to completely remove all brake parts, to remove
ALL Rust & lube the proper points

You don't use a parking brake on any vehicle, even at home,
or your asking for the same problem

Parking brake is for hills & when your on the road, to
protect the transmission & prevent a roll away

I CAN NOT SHIFT THR TRANS INTO NUTRAL SO I CAN TOW IT BEHIND MY MOTOR HOME. IT WILL SHIFT INTO 2H, 4H, 4L

Shifting to NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL, first make sure
the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N) or have
the clutch pedal pressed for vehicles with
manual transmission.
5. Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
6. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and
4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL
light will come on when the transfer case shift to
NEUTRAL is complete.
7. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one
second, then shift the transmission to DRIVE (D)
for one second or FIRST (1) for vehicles with
manual transmission.
8. Turn the ignition to OFF.
9. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P) or
FIRST (1) for vehicles with manual transmission.
10. Release the parking brake prior to towing.

Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
To shift out of NEUTRAL:
1. Set the parking brake and apply the regular
brake pedal.
2. Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P)
or FIRST (1) for vehicles with manual transmission.
3. Press the button for the desired transfer case position
(2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WD or 4LO).
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N) or press the
clutch pedal for vehicles with manual transmission.

Can't shift

Diane,

It's happened to my Jag S type V8 (2000) twice- resulting in the car being towed to my mechanic.

It's the J-gate shifter-- it's plastic piece that fails when stuck in park (it's not your transmission going out, but that will happen by 60K miles).

Way to avoid getting stuck is to first pull the parking brake before shift from drive into park. And keep the parking brake engaged when you shift from park into drive or reverse (after you have shifted, then release the parking brake). I know it's crazy, but it works! Jag even addresses this in the Owner's Manual.

Beware: the car is a piece of junk- I can't wait to get rid of mine- going on 4 years and nothing but problems, spent over $10K on repairs....

I have a 1995 mazda 323 and it has been sitting for 6 months, was it good condition when i parked it. I realize the battery is dead, but it won't even budge when we try to push it in neutral, what could be...

Emergency brake could be stuck in the "ON" position. try rocking the car forward and backward.
Also engage the "E" brake and disengage multiple times to try get it unstuck.
