1991 Honda Accord Sta Wgn EX Auto.Car runs great with 435K all original. Trouble starts at speeds above 60. First sign is RPM tach becomes erratic on its own with no associated engine roughness. Keeping same or adding more power/speed makes Tach progressively more erratic at which point the engine starts to stumble and drop rpm very quickly. No codes are given. WTF??

Ever tune it up,?
carb engine, or EFI?
the tacho action tells you the primary ingition side is failing.
the jumper is inserted, in the EFI , code 8 is spark misfire.
jumper the service check connector , 2 pins.
code 8 can clear fast, so you make engine mistfire, watching the lamp. but is only more evidence that the the ECU can not fire the coil.
The Tacho proves that. if the code 4 or 9 show up, bingo.
drive with the jumper planted.
see page 6-96 in the FSM book.

Hi ....
On your HOnda accord V6.
The rpm is generated from the Distributor.
The more possible problem for erratic RPM is the cam sensor inside of the Distributor. But I guess you can't buy just the sensor.
And can afect the engine performance.

OK. I hope this information work for you.
I work on cars everyday. Thank you for use fixya.

The s light comes on and car will not start while it is on

"S" usually refers to the speed sensor This sensor translates your MPH and RPM . If the tranny is behaving erratically, try to troubleshoot by pulling the codes from the on board diagnostic unit (You can usually do this with a paper clip after you locate where the connector is located). Refer to Honda codes for your model They will blink on your dashboard and you count the number of blinks that correspond to the Honda engine code. the "S" light is sort of like the check engine light, except it refers to tranny problems only....there is a cable speed sensor cable, that is attached to the top of your tranny and runs to the back of the odometer.

Flashing green s on the dash

A green flashing "S" is similar to a check engine light. It is telling you that something in or on your transmission is not functioning correctly, such as the speed sensor or shift control solenoids. If it starts flashing and the speedometer stops working or the transmission shifts weird, take it to a mechanic.
