The water pump pulley on your car may melt if the water pump belt tensioner seizes, causing the pulley to overheat and deform. This may also result in the engine overheating and possibly damaging the head gasket. To fix this problem, you will need to replace the water pump drive pulley, the water pump belt, and the tensioner pulley. You may also need a special tool to remove and install the new pulley.

Removal & Installation

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
2. Drain the coolant.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   Negative battery cable

Upper fill panel, if equipped
AIR injection control valve, if equipped
Air cleaner
Oil level indicator tube nut, if necessary
Water pump belt cover
Water pump drive beltLower radiator hose
Thermostat bypass hose from the coolant inlet housing
Water pump cover

Remove the water pump by rotating it clockwise using special Tool J 38816-1A (water pump remover/installer).
To install:
Install the water pump with a new O-ring, by turning it counterclockwise using the special tool, until it stops. Torque the water pump to 73 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

Install or connect the following:

Water pump cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
Lower radiator hose
Thermostat bypass hose to the coolant inlet housing
Water pump drive belt
Water pump belt cover
Oil level indicator tube nut, if necessary
Air cleaner
AIR injection control valve, if equipped
Upper fill panel, if equipped
Negative battery cable

• Refill and bleed the cooling system.

Run the engine and check for leaks.

ok first, the fan it wont stop running cause is trying to cool the engine down, due to the leak, is it leaking from the warter pump? if the water pump is the problem you need a special tool to remove the water pump ant to put the new one in place, and that will fix your problem but first the leak, thats causing all the problem. First of all,you will need the Northstar waterpump removal tool, You can get this from most reputable auto part stores and looks like this :-

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position.You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

As for the waterpump itself, DO NOT buy anything other than AC DELCO as they are the highest quality and is a genuine GM replacement part.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.
Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.

You need a special water pump tool. you can rent one from Auto Zone. The water pump housing is the bottom radiator hose on the right side of the engine. remove the hose and the outer-caseing, the waterpump is now slightly visable. Use a .5 inch rachet with the Special tool and turn clockwise.
