I just put a trans in a '99 4x4.I put in with everything connected just as the other trans was,but it won't engage any gears. Before I put it in I filled the converter with 1 qt. fluid, was that right or not.Trans is full of fluid to the top dot.Could the trans he got have been bad already,or transfer case be stuck in neutral or something? I have no lights on the 4x4 indicator, not eve 2wd or auto. I don't know if the owner had any before or not. Please help he needs truck back today.
I don't see you did anything wrong per your description.
With the engine off, check the level of the transmission oil, replace the dipstick, start the truck and recheck the fluid level, level should drop. This will indicate the front pump is working.
Next, with truck running, put transmission into any gear, then return to park position. Do you hear any ratcheting noise.
Let me know.
Regards,
It sounds like the front pump is not working. After you bolted the trans to the engine, were you able to turn the torque converter easily to install the converter bolts? Just wondering if the converter is in the front pump properly.
Let me know.
Regards,
The coverter will fill if the front pump is working. You should have added about 10 - 12 quarts of trans oil if the pump is functioning.
It really sounds like the transmission is bad.
Good luck, let me know.

No fluid level change, no noise in trans going in and out of gear. Some noise at startup but not at every start. Why is indicator light going out?

I checked the fluid,no level change,no gears either. The trans came from a recycling yard, guess it wasn't any good to begin with.Thank you for your help I do appreciate it.He'll just have to take it to someone who has the time and experience to go any further.
I'm sure the converter was in all the way,I turned and pushed it in as far as it would go.I had no alingment or bolt-up problems. Will the converter not fill up the rest of the way if I didn't get it all the way full?
I checked all the connections, electronic and mechanical, they were good. I had no problem turning the converter when I put in the converter bolts.
I got the lights on the 4x4 swithches working, but still no gears.I guess it's just the trans. Thanks to all who helped, but I'm done with this truck and I'll just have to tell him to take it to a pro.
Did the converter get locked into place by turning it until it was seated all the way back into the transmission. If not the pump will not be engaged for the transmission to work. Should fall back three or four times as you are turning it.The converter should have been filled completely also, should hold several quarts unless it was pre-filled Make sure all the electronics are connected also.
