Distributor / Plug wires

My son replaced his plugs and plug wires. I think he might have put the wrong plug wire onto the wrong plug. The timing is off and I am not a mechanic. Any thoughts??

Spark plug wiring from distributor cap to spark plugs on a 95 honda civic dx 1.5 liter 16 valve sohc

If you look at the distributor cap from the wires side carefully, you would find either a line mark on one of the outer side of four holes (where the spark plug wires are inserted) or the numbers printed on the top of distributor cap (1,3,4,2). Fix one end of the longest high tension plug wire into number 1 hole or the one marked with a line mark on the distributor cap and the other end on spark plug number 1 (the number 1 plug is toward the pulleys and the belts side, then No 2, No 3 and No 4). While standing in front of right wheel you will see the distributor cap in front of you. The rotor moves clock wise. After you fix the 1st cord, next comes number 3 plug wire. Insert one end of the cord into the next to 1 on the right hand side and press the other side of the cord on spark plug number 3. Next to 3 is the cord number 4 and the last one is number 2.

How to replace spark plug wires on a 1996 mazda ES 4 cylinder

Make sure that you have the right wires from the parts store. Whatever you do, work with only one wire at a time and no more. That is rule #1.

Rule #2 - never forget #1.

Take the boot of one wire at the distributor and pull up. Trace the path of that wire to one spark plug. Grab the boot of that end - the boot is the fat part at the end of the wire - and give it a twist as you pull on it. The wire should pop off. Take the set of new wires and find one that is the closest in length to the one you removed and prepare to put it on.

Before you put the new wires on, if the old ones are hard to get off, add some silicone gel that is available at the parts store to the inside of the new wire at the plug end so that it will come off easier next time. Push the new wire on the plug until it is snug and then re-route the new wire in the same path that the old one came off until you get to the distributor. Push that end of the wire onto the distributor firmly and then pick the next wire to work on.

The one wire that is left over that has different ends is the coil wire and runs from the middle of the distributor to the coil.

Best wishes.

How do I do a tune-up on my jeep cherokee

REPLACE THE PLUGS, WIRES, AND DISTRIBUTOR AND ROTOR CAP! THE WIRES ARE VERY IMPORTANT THEY ARE IN CORRECT ORDER! IT IS BEST TO REPLACE THEM ONE AT A TIME TO INSURE THE FIRING ORDER IS CORRECT! THE BEST WAY IS TO RAISE THE CAP, PUT THE NEW ONE ON THE JEEP, AND ONE BY ONE, WATCH THE LOCATION OF THE WIRE YOU TAKE OFF, AND PLACE IT IN THE SAME LOCATION ON THE NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP! THEN ONE BY ONE, REMOVE THE WIRE FROM THE PLUG, REPLACE THE PLUG, AND PUT THE WIRE BACK ONTO THE PLUG! NOW YOUR READY FOR THE WIRES! WHEN YOU REPLACE THEM, DO IT ONE AT A TIME! WHEN YOU TAKE IT OFF THE PLUG, PUT THE NEW WIRE ON THE PLUG, THEN TRACE THE WIRE TO THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP, REMOVE IT AND INSTALL THE NEW WIRE IN ITS PLACE! THIS WILL ENSURE YOU HAVE IT BACK THE SAME WAY THE OLD ONES COME OFF!

Took the distributor out and cleaned it then put it back in and now the truck wont crank but tries to do so. need some tips please

Did you take out the ENTIRE Distributor or just the cap?

If you took out the entire Distributor, and put it back in, there is a possibility that you put it in backwards. The bottom of the Distributor has a 'notch' in it. If you turn it 180 degrees the wrong way, and put it back in, your truck will not start, because it is in effect 180 degrees out of alignment with the timing.

If you only took out the cap, refer to your owners manual (Hanes is best) for the plug wire placement in reference to the firing order, and make sure all the plug wires are in the correct locations. Also, make sure your plug wires are seated all the way down onto the plugs, and the cap is secured tightly onto the base of the Distributor.

Make sure your Coil Wires are also seated properly to the coil and the Distributor.

Clean the battery connections. Remove the battery connections, clean them and reinstall.

My sable is backfiring and lacks power sometimes with jerks

Hi,
It sounds like you have a timing issue. One question I would have to ask, is if recently, have the spark plugs or plug wires been replaced. Sometimes a plug wire can be snapped onto the wrong plug or into the wrong spot on the distributor.
Else I would have the timing checked. This could be a quick fix for you. I'm hoping so... Good luck!

What order do i plug the spark plugs into the distributor on 1989 honda civic 1.5L

The plug wires are different lengths for different spark plugs. The best way to not get messed up is to do one wire at a time. Unplug old wire from distributor and plug, compare it to the new ones, find the new one that is the same length and replace. You don't want to get the wires mixed up. Hope this helped.
