2005 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4litre V6 sometimes starts hard after warm. It will go into excessive crank and seemingly a continued starter engagement when key is released. It has never failed to start? Occasionally will run rough when started and a quick key off/on will reboot and correct? Not sure if both issues are related, but starter system does get its power through PCM.....

Hello Michael,

Typically PCM's are rather robust components that are not as prone to failure as sensors are. Some automotive electronic components can fail under heat stress and work fine after they have cooled down...like an ignition control module.

As you are experiencing your problem while engaging the ignition switch (which you described as sometimes hanging up) I would start your trouble shooting with the ignition switch itself.

  • Ignition starter switch directs current from the fuse panel to other systems in the vehicle
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no-start, intermittent shut down and/or current will not flow to all systems.
Your vehicle also has steering column lock actuator you will have to deal with when removing the ignition switch for replacement which is rated as "easy"

Is the security light on? If you have spark and fuel, it should run. Any codes? Could be bad crank sensor or cam sensor.

SOURCE: car wont start...sometimes

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, usually cheapest and easiest to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit. It is always best to check for power between the solenoid and the starter with a test light, if the solenoid clicks but the test light doesn't light up you have found the problem in the solenoid.

SOURCE: Idles rough and is hard to start apears to run better after it warms up. Have replaced the ICO, TPS, and the map sensors with no effect.

You can clean the EGR. No promise it will work. I have an idle problem on my `97 Grand Am Se. Shop told me I could clean it and it might solve my problem.
Just remove the EGR with the 2 bolts from the top of the manifold behind the throttle body if you have a 3.4 v6 like I do. Then leave it upside down with throttle body cleaner in it. Fill the EGR level with cleaner and let it soak for at least 30 min or more. Then reinstall.
This will remove any carbon on the inside which plugs the needle from pushing out at highway speeds. Hope this helps. If the problem returns in a week or so then replace with new EGR. New EGR is about $100-200! Cleaning seems to have helped my car did that about 3 weeks ago.
If you have a service engine light on turn the key to the run position on the ignition, pull the fuse to the ECM (batt) and disconnect the wire harness to the EGR. Reinstall it after a 1 min, That will clear all the codes in the ECM and reset everything.
Once you place the ECM fuse back in, start the car. It may stall but let it, DO NOT TOUCH ANY THING. The ECM need to relearn the EGR and engine from all it's sensors like the first time it was started. Just start it up again and it should be like the day it came off the assembly line and will relearn everything.
Good luck and just drive it like you always. If you decide to change the EGR valve, you still need to clear the ECM as mentioned above for the ECM to relearn the new EGR valve. Hope this helps and keep me posted.

SOURCE: 97 Pontiac GTP will not always start, turn

Yes,..

From the sounds of it check whats called your vehicles drive gear linkage. It's what tells the car it's in gears of neutral, drive, reverse etc,..

When the linkage isn't set proper the ignition sequence doesn't know if the car is really in park, neutral, drive or reverse and won't start it via that minor adjustment.

Why wont my 2005 Pontiac Sunfire start sometimes?

It sounds like there may be an issue with the ignition system on your 2005 Pontiac Sunfire. Here are a few potential causes for the problem you're experiencing:
  1. Faulty ignition switch: The ignition switch is responsible for sending power to the starter, so if it's not working properly, the engine may not crank.
  2. Bad starter solenoid: The starter solenoid is responsible for engaging the starter when you turn the key, if it is not functioning properly, the engine will not crank.
  3. Wiring problem: If there is a problem with the wiring leading to the starter or ignition switch, it can prevent the engine from cranking.
  4. Failed crankshaft position sensor: This sensor is responsible for relaying the engine's position to the car's computer. A bad sensor can cause a no-start condition.
  5. Failed PCM (Powertrain Control Module) that can prevent the engine from starting.
It's likely that one of these issues is causing the problem you're experiencing, but it can be difficult to diagnose without proper testing. It would be best to take it to a professional mechanic for proper diagnosis and repair.

My 2005 Pontiac grand am has good battery, good alternator and a good starter, but try to crank it I get nothing what could it be.

I would start by using a meter to verify that you are getting battery voltage at least somewhere in the car and then start working back. Could be a broken wire, blown fuse, bad relay, dirty battery terminals, etc. I personally had similar problems due to excessive corrosion on my battery terminals. Removed, cleaned, installed with the proper grease and fixed. So sometimes it can be a simple issue. Just going to have to do some troubleshooting.

2004 grand am se v6 sometimes wont start unless gas pedal is pushed

when you say -turn over do you mean firing-turning over to me means the starter motor is cranking or turning over-firing is when combustion happens in the cylinders-as far as the cranking continuing-try some wd40 in the ignition switch-it may be hanging up-Denny

05 grand cherokee wont start .full power lights dont dim when cranking then it starts like nothings wrong. i tried jump starting it then i climbed under it and hit the starter and it started

If the starter motor spins at high speed, but doesn't turn the engine until you whack it, the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. Probably the engagement fork or the starter gear is worn out or sticky, or the solenoid isn't pushing it far enough.

What is the diagram for 2005 grand am

I would check the crank fuse in the fusebox. Also check to see if when the key is turned to the starting position, that there is power going to the small terminal on the starter solenoid.

A security light in my dash comes on and when it does the next time i kill my car it wont crank. it kills the ignition, starter, fuel pump and maybe more. i have to turn the key into the on position and...

Looks like the security system (PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars and it can get worse till the car wont start anymore. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.
