Hi!
Start by charging the battery completely. Then, start your car and while running, remove the NEGATIVE battery cable from the battery. If the car dies, your alternator is bad. If it keeps running, reinstall the battery cable and turn the car off. Check for something that's on that would drain your battery like a light in the trunk, glove box, etc. that wont shut off.

I have 1992 Volvo 940 turbo 4cyl . I need advice on how to change my alternator belt

Underneath the alternator facing forward is a 13 mm nut which locks the alternator in place, slacken this off and the two nuts/bolts where the alternator pivots. From the left side of the car there is a 10 mm bolt which is the tensioner, slacken this untill the alternator can be moved towards the engine sufficiently to remove the belt .Reverse this procedure to replace the belt. (depending on drives to other items you may have to remove their belts as well)

My 1993 940 non-turbo just dies when running as if the alternator is bad. However, the alternator has been replaced. It still dies and needs to be jumped. When jumped, it'll run for a bit then die a...

OK the battery in good charge should be at 12.5 volts ( as measured with a voltmeter across the terminals) When the engine is running you should expect the reading to be about 14 volts. Put the lights on ( a load on the battery) and the voltage can go as high as 14.5v. Switch everything off (I mean everything..radio etc) and disconnect the negative terminal to the battery. Now put the meter in ammeter mode and measure the current between the negative terminal and the cable that is now disconnected. It should be really very low current (milliamps at most), switch on the lights to show ourself what that current drain looks like. If the residual current looks significant take out each fuse in turn and return it noting on pen and paper any drop in current when the fuse is out. This process will identify the circuit that is draining the battery. Check the wires and junctions in this circuit for shorts etc. If its lights try removing bulbs until the current drain stops If possible leave the fuse out over night on this circuit and see if this effects the battery's ability to charge and stay charged.

1992 volvo 940 turbo died while driving and will not start

two things to check,,, there is a crank sensor at the back of the engineby the bulkhead,,at the top of the engine where the gearbox joins ,,,the sensors are known to be faulty if sometimes ,,, check the cable to the sensor,,if it is damaged replace the sensor,,,the other common problem is the fuel pump relay,,, behind the fusebox in the dash
