Hi there,
I have a 1993 VW Cabriolet, after dealing with a shady mechanic that ripped me off royally, I have taken it on myself to fix my shifting problem...which I should have done in the first place! It turns out that in the end the problem was simple shift linkage that needed replaced. HOWEVER in my tinkering and trying to find out what was wrong I also took apart the whole assembly around the shifter, replaced bushings, etc. While I am 99% sure everything is back the way it is supposed to be, I am having trouble getting things adjusted just right. I have all the gears, and it is nice and snug, however when driving it doesn't seem to be engaging the gears quite right. Almost like I was driving with the clutch in so that it doesn't have the power it should and never gets fully in gear. Any tips or tricks to get the adjustment right? The clutch was perfect before the whole linkage problem and to my knowledge wasn't touched at all throughout my tinkering. Any help would be Great!

There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.
Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.
If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.
There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to
the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking
collar or clamp.
The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.
Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in
the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten
the clamp.
You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.
This is much easier if you have an assistant.

Don't need a diagram.
Start by checking to see that ur cable hasn't come off the throttle body or that the clip in the floor behind the gas pedal is still there.
If it's broken, remove the clip on the floor and remove from the throttle body. Disconnect the cable from the pedal and pull it out from the inside of the car.

I recommend new but a breakers yard will be alot cheaper, the bush is only available with the linkage.

I had the same thing happen to my 2001. I Got a good stiff close hanger (metal) and made my own clasp. It cost me nothing and It's been working for over two years now. Take that Ford! $400 to fix it Ford, give me a break!!!
