The convertible top of my 2003 z4 won't retract. The light for retraction went on, blinked several times and then stopped. Now no light is coming on and the raise and lower buttons are non-responsive. Fuses are fine... everything else seems to be working. We've never had a problem before with this but it did stick last time we ran it through the car wash (the blower put too much pressure on it I think). We recently ran it though the car wash and now the top seems to be really stuck. We tried to troubleshoot using the owner's manual but nothing worked. It almost seems like it needs to reset. Any ideas?

I have this same vehicle and have had some problems with my top as well. Apparently, it is pretty common as I was recently talking to a shop owner with the same model and I were comparing notes. First thing to check is that the two "nobs" in the trunk are not rotated. The two nobs I am referring to are located on the top of the trunk when opened and when moved, either drop or lower the compartment into which the convertible top drops into when lowered. If these nobs are not turned so that the compartment is available, the top will not work. I have always wondered why they even installed those, but I was told it was so that we could have that extra 3" of storage space if absolutely needed. If the nobs are in the right position and your top is still not working, you can manually drop or bring up the top by turning the red handle (also located in the trunk near the convertible top storage) so that it is no longer flush, but turned so that you can see the 'O' shape. This has been my only option when my top started acting up in the middle of a Florida thunderstorm. Fantastic timing these things have. I hope this was helpful. If you are like most others who own the z4, or any bmw (or even a vw), you know that the mechanics (engine, etc.) are great in the fact that they rarely, if ever, cause any issues, but silly things like the stupid cup holders (don't get me started) and eventually bigger, but still aesthetic, items liek the top are the first to go. Would still never trade the z4 for a sedan.

The first comment by Juli H was very valuable. Our top has stuck before and a swift strike with the fist seems to release the stuck top so it will open. If you can hear the motor running and the top is not moving the the trunk latches are not your problem, it is really stuck at the locking points and probably needs to be lubricated. I recomment some white lithium grease you can by in auto center of your local Walmart.

2012 Volvo C70 convertible. The top is stored, trunk lid opens as normal, then everything stops. Have to wait maybe 30 minutes then I can successfully close the top back down.

Question moved from spanish car maker 'Seat' (See-At).
Question edited for clarity. Guessing it is a Volvo, so moved it there. 'Year Make Model' in all question please.

Try, it just be aware of pinch points and get ready to move fast. Also have someone at the ignition key ready to cut power in case anything jams.

Convertible top motor

Motor is shot common for water to build up in the plastic housing causing the motor to fail.

The reservoir / hydraulic motor is located down inside the cavity where the top pivots on the body on the drivers side. It is inside a plastic housing

These are not easy to get to because the whole top needs to be removed to access it.

Hope that helps.

The Convertible top of Mercedes-Benz 2005 CLK 320 won't open or close.

If the "black part" you are talking about is the "trunk partition"(which should come up as a "fault" on the dash when you try and cycle the top) then there are several things to check. The partition itself should snap into the retracted position(forward), and back. If it doesn't there are two struts(also called air springs) that have lost their charge and are not holding the partition in place. It has to be held solidly in place to set the switch on the left side(driver side) in order for the top to go down. If it's at all floppy, it won't set that switch and the top won't cycle. I've found the hard way this is a common problem.

Looking for plastic piece back flap of 2003 beetle automatic convertible

beetles always have something breaking, the junkyards have a lot of them, you should be able to find a whole complete top for a decent price and go after the "reputable" shop to reimburse you.
if you want to just get the plastic part that is possible too from the junkyard, what i do with my beetle is look at the junkyard car so i know how to put it together once i get the part home.

Car in unheated garage northeast.Went to retract top for prospective buyer top retracted into cradle but would not completely close up and lid would not close Dealer said probably due to extreme cold...

Extreme cold conditions may cause motors and other components to have difficulty functioning. I would suggest heating the garage to atleast an above freezing temp and try opening/closing the top again several times to find out for sure if this is your problem

The electric wings will not drop when letting the top down.

I have the same problem with my car. I just bought a 2004 VW Beetle and have never owned a convetible before. So when I saw the wings I asked if this was normal. The mechanic at the dealer said that on the 04 those wings do not retract when the top is down, only when the top is closed. Now my car will beep when I start driving because the top is not down all the way, also the indicator light shows a blinking car in the temp display letting me know the top in not down all the way. I read a solution from someone else and it said to keep keep the button to open the top pressed or pulled.......whichever is the way to open it...until the motor stops, but that did not work. So I decided to do a little research online and saw pictures of 2004 convertible VW beetles with the top down....low and behold the wings were retracted when the top was down. So the mechanic at the dealer lied. If these people do not know what their cars do and don't do, they should not be working there. They are compltley neglagant and incompitent. If anyone has an ansewr for me, it would be appreciated.

Airbag light flashes 5-1 5-1 5-1 as long as the key is on

The way I solved my problem with the airbag indicator light is: I took the passenger side seat belt at full retraction and slowly pulled it out until it reached the stop several times and each time allowing the seat belt to fully retract to its normal position. Apparently there are foreign debris (dust, lint, loose hair, etc.) that is interferring with the sensor response and triggering the indicator to come on. All the seat belts in the vehicle (no matter what brand) should be exercised/cleaned periodically to eliminate this problem. Also, as you pull the seat belts out until it reaches its stop to wipe with a lint free cloth as it extends and retracts. Keep in mind that it could be another kind of problem. This solution has worked for me several times.

Convertible top won't open

If its yellow, thats a good thing. Check in the trunk that the two knobs that hold the top when retracted are in the down position. Top should drop like it always has. LOVE MY Z4!

Top will delatch but doesn't retract.

it is on the driver side, there is a SIB on this and sould be covered under warr, what is happening is the motor fills with water and burns out, it is not easy at all to replace and the motor is expensive, when you get it replaced make sure they byutl cord the casing and drill drain holes so it does not happen again
