Changed starter and ignition switch on 350 with HEI, I lost all power from switch and it shorts the battery to completely dead. I got the problem from someone else who installed the motor. It is in a 68 C-10, the truck started at first and then the starter went bad. changed it and then had nothing, changed the switch and found someone wired power from the alternator to the pink wire. I cut it and switch checks to be working right but still not firing. any help would be great.

Not sure I follow you. Are you going to rewire the key switch power source back to the starter post ?
And the truck is actually a 1968 instead of a 1986 ?

Testimonial: "Yes it is a 68, and I am trying to get things staightened out so it is correct. someone else had jumped from the alternator to the pink wire at the switch. I have power on the red andwhen Iturn the key I have it on the pink and very little on the purple."

Take off the distributor cap. Check the star wheel that is splined to the distributor shaft that the pick-up coil uses. Make sure this wheel is not loose on the distributor shaft. It is right above the pick-up. If it is loose, replace the distributor. This is a common problem. If it needs one, all the part stores stock the distributor.

IF YOU HAVE A POINTS TYPE DISTRIBUTER, THE WIRING WILL BE: TO ENERGIZE THE STARTER SOLENOID A LARGE, ABOUT A NUMBER 12 OR 14 GAUGE WIRE WILL GO TO THE INNER MOST SMALL TERMINAL ON THE STARTER SOLENOID. IT MAY BE PURPLE IN COLOR. THE SECOND SMALLER WIRE SHOULD GO TO THE OUTER SOLENOID TERMINAL AND GO FROM THERE TO THE + TERMINAL ON THE IGNITION COIL. THIS IS FOR BY PASSING THE RESISTOR WIRE FROM THE STARTER IGNITION SWITCH. THE LARGER BATTERY CABLE WILL GO TO THE UPPER TERMINAL ON THE STARTER SOLENOID. THERE MAY BE AN ADDITIONAL BATTERY FEED WIRE TAKE OFF FROM THE STARTER BATTERY TERMINAL POST ON THE SOLENOID FOR OTHER ACCESSORIES. THIS TYPE OF SYSTEM (POINTS TYPE) WAS TYPICALLY DONE AWAY WITH IN 1975 WHEN THE HEI DISTRIBUTOR CAME OUT.

SOURCE: 1997 chevy blazer key stuck in ignition AGAIN GRRRRRRR

I have worked on several vehicles with this same problem and each one was a relatively simple repair with no parts involved, first off the shift interlock has nothing to do with it and will not prevent your vehicle from going into park, it is designed to work ONLY when coming out of park. The problem your having depends on the type of shifter handle your vehicle has, if the release lever is on the bottom and you have to push up with your fingers to release it, then the problem is...there is a rubber type cover that surrounds the release button, after time it becomes distorted and bunches up preventing the shifter from fully engaging in the park position (even though it appears the vehicle is going into park)if your careful you can work the rubber cover out and your problem is fixed. If your shifter button is on the side and pressed with your thumb the cable needs to be adjusted, this cables only purpose is to prevent key removal except when in park and is easily adjusted, with the center council removed, if you look at the front of the shifter base you will see 2 cables that snap into the shifter frame, the larger one is the gear selector cable, the smaller one runs up to the steering column and operates the mechanism that prevents key removal, where the cable snaps into the shifter frame is where the adjustment is done and is identical to a kick-down cable used on older vehicles with automatic transmissions, right where it snaps into the frame there will be a button you can press down releasing a spring loaded adjustment arm, make sure you first mark the arm for reference then press down the button and adjust it a little either way until it functions properly, hope this helps and good luck

My 2013 Lexus ES 350 had new battery one year ago. No power yesterday after sitting for 3 days. Charged battery and now today it is dead again.

It may have an internal short or a leak where it lost all water. You may also have a short 8n the vehicle that is draining the battery. Make sure all lights are off when car is off. I had a bad brake light switch that caused my brake lights to stay on and that drained my battery overnight. I didn't notice it when parking during the day.

Original Engine wiring conv. to hei schematic?

Dead simple. Old system used a resistor wire between ign. switch and coil. HEI does not need this so you need to run a 10 or 12 guage wire from the ignition switch "ON" position to the new coil with no resistor in between. This also means you no longer need the extra wire from the starter to the coil which was used to bypass the resistor wire in the old system to provide full 12 volts for starting car. The reason for the resistor wire in the circuit was to reduce the voltage to the coil once running so the amps in the spark would be higher to burn more thoughly and increase fuel mileage.
