If it runs good in park or at idle but is slugish when you try to accelerate it is likely a fuel issue. I would start with a new fuel filter. When you press on the gas you need more fuel pressure and if the pump cant get more through the clogged filter you will get that. If it runs bad even at idle it is likely a spark issue and needs new plugs and wires. I would give it a good tune up - oil change, spark plugs (platinum or iridium), plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, PCV Valve and see how she runs after that.

Sounds like a fuel filter issue. If the filter is clogged or is getting to the point where it's going to be clogged badly the amount of fuel going to the engine will be restricted. This would cause your stated problem. Theoretically there isn't much of a need to go over 4000 rpm unless you are racing with the car but I think most bimmer owners can understand where you are coming from:) As far as the 1993, I'd check all your intake piping and vacuum lines and make sure there are no leaks whatsoever. An easy way to check is to have the car running and spray carb cleaner on the intake piping and such and see if your revs increase, if they do you've got a leak. Hope this helps! I'd be glad to help with any other questions you might have a please don't forget to rate me.
