The water pump pushes water through the engine, out the thermostat (when open from heat in the engine) and into the radiator for cooling, then back into the engine and water pump through the bottom radiator hose. So the coolant is circulated by the water pump around like that. The overflow tank is part of the system, but the pump does not circulate coolant through the overflow tank. When coolant is hot, it expands, and the overflow tank catches the extra coolant, from the expanded coolant opening the radiator cap by increased pressure, and letting coolant go into the overflow tank.
When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant is in constant circulation from engine to radiator and back into the engine.

Whats causes coolant to stay in reservoir bottle and not return to coolant lines?

I would be looking at cracks in the hose to the reservoir to the radiator . Look for loose fittings. Check that if the hose is in the top of the reservoir in the filler cap that the pick up line is to the bottom of the bottle and not cracked . What you have is air getting into the line when the vacuum from a cooling engine starts to work and that prevents water being sucked back

I have a 98 jetta glx vr6, every time i drive it the car will over heat. i know that the fan works and turns on and there is no leaks. so i know that there is air in the radiator system. How i bleed or...

Hi. It souds to me like you might have to replce the thermostat in the water pump. If you think there is air in the system, try opening the water resevoir bottle and let the car idle for about 5 minutes, topping up the water as the air voids escape through the return pipe. I doubt that there could be air in the system, as the pump would automaticaly push the air out into the resevoir bottle. Worth a try. Hope this helps

PLease help- When i pour water in water bottle of my Toyota lucida 94 reg-it pours straight out the bottom, any ideas why ?

What water bottle? If it is the windshield washer, then either the hose, pump, or bottle itself is cracked. Find out exactly where the water is coming out.

If some other bottle, answer the first question.

Thanks, Jim

Cooling system airlocked

Airlocked? Often by pulling a line of an air buble will be relased. moving hoses so they can fill with water and the air can pass works too. You did not mention the engine you have. Mine is the 2.3, when I drained, flushed and refilled the system had no major problems. there is a air bleed line from the water outlet (under ps pump, left side of engine) to the plastic bottle, right front. the restriction is in the niple at the pastic bottle is it pluged preventing the air to bleed? I always drill a 1/16 hole in the flange of a new thermostat when replacing it, that helps the air to escape and the system to better fill. The thermostat is on the return to the engine, water pump inlet, under the exhaust manifold (not a great design)

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.

How can I check the fuse of the water pump for the rear wiper. the wiper move but no water coming out!

there are two pumps on the bottle one for the front and the other for the back. most likely the pump stopped working or something got in it and blocked the water flow. the pumps are at the bottom of the bottle. check them out first. they will be the same so you could switch them and see what happens. good luck

Changed expansion tank but light still on any ideas 03 ford escape low coolant level light on dash stays lightup

bad low coolant switch or still low on coolant.

Engine Cooling The cooling system components are the:
  • engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648)
  • radiator (8005)
  • degas bottle (8A080)
  • radiator draincock (8115)
  • water pump (8501)
  • water temperature indicator sender unit (10884)
  • water thermostat (8575)
  • dual speed fan motor assembly
The water pump circulates the coolant.
The water thermostat:
  • controls the engine coolant temperature.
  • allows quicker engine warm-up.
The degas bottle:
  • provides a location for fill.
  • contains coolant expansion and system pressurization.
  • provides air separation during operation.
  • replenishes the engine coolant to the system.
The fan motor (8C607):
  • operates only when the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  • will not operate with the switch in the OFF position.
The engine coolant flows:
  • from the lower radiator hose (8286) to the water pump.
  • from the water pump to the engine block and the cylinder heads.
A closed water thermostat returns the engine coolant to the water pump; an open water thermostat allows the engine coolant to flow to the radiator.
Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level in the degas bottle.
When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and engine coolant.
To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system:
