I would agree with Dale. However, depending on the year of the vehicle it may be completely electronic. Could just be a bad harness or loose wire.
Your shift cable has came unhooked from either your transmission or your shifter. Most likely it’s at the trans. There are little plastic retainers at the ends of the shift cables that get old and brittle and will break. You may be able to match one up from a auto parts store but sometimes you have to replace the whole cable.. The vehicle will not start because it’s still in gear, no vehicle will start unless it’s in either park or neutral..

If the trans.oil is dark brown in color and smell's burnt your tranny is probably on it's last leg.If tou have bad pump pressure or low oil you will have to rev the eng to get it to build enough pressure to move.Your detent cable or kick down cable is for passing, when you step on the gas when passing someone this cable is pulled causing the trans. to go into a lower gear and when you let off the gas it should shift back into a higher gear.if it's out of adjustment it will kickdown to soon or to late.If your car has alot of miles it may be in need of a filter and fluid change, but usually when slipping occures its to late and you will need a replacement tranny.Hope this was helpfull.

Sounds like the torque converter clutch solenoid is bad. Unplug it and see if the problem stops. Unplug the 4 wire plug on the front of the transmission.

the batt is suspect...take it to autozone, or other place, they'll check it out free......the shifting out of park is a seperate issue, the pawl for the steering/shifter is not working properly....did you notice if the steering wheel would turn when the shifter is stuck?....probably not....when this happens try to turn the wheel back and forth-not hard but not gently- a little graphite dust sprayed in there would help.......hope this helps you out
