they are on the sides of the block and in the heads near the exhaust manifolds. There may be one at the rear of the block and head/s as well. Have a coolant pressure test done to find the faulty plug
Bang on the catalytic converter being careful not to get burnt and see if it's loose causing a rattle. Until you determind what the problem is don't drive the vehicle. The other possibility is that you may need an engine. If what you're hearing us a connecting rid knock.
Distributor shifted on you and timing is out of phase. turn the distributor about 1/4 inch counter clockwise with your hands and test drive it . if it improves you have a busted bolt on the core (not uncommon for an old CJ) .. may need to tighten bolt or drill out a new thread and put a tight bolt in . When you are out of phase, it sounds like you have an exhaust problem , loud noise in exhaust and no compression nor acceleration , except in lower (high rev) gears. jorge diaz
The direct drive sungear is most likely the problem inside the transmision. The brass bearings do wear and the gearing get sloppy causing this noise. A complete tear down of the trans will have to be performed or a rebuilt trans is needed. If this has many miles on it replace the trans
You have one of several things wrong 1- threw a rod = expensive 2- locked the engine up = expensive 3- lost the timing belt or chain = expensive but not as - IF _-- you didn't bend any rods
I hope this kind of helps - as I know no one wants to hear this kind of news. I hope the best for you but it does sound like major engine problems.
The rattle is likely a loose shield or a bad catalytic converter. As for the loud banging, Have you checked the front U-joints behind the brake rotors. As for the Reverse noise? Auto or stick shift?
check the catalytic converter, sounds as if the cat converter is breaking down and the little pieces are banging around in the shell. has the fuel mileage suffered at all? has it lost power? if so then yes i'd say it was the cat
