1998 4.3l chevrolet truck.auto transmission started slipping.

It gave no warning. slips in every gear. is due for recommended scheduled service.fluid level is fine. color and smell seem fine too.thought I'd try fluid filter change first, but don't know what transmission it has or the capacity.
(lost owners manual)it's the basic model Cheyenne.is this worth a shot or am I wasting my time and putting off the inevitable rebuild?

  • wareaglejnm Apr 03, 2009

just tried it out.worked fine at first, after about a mile or two it started to slip. slips in all gears Od 3 2 1 & R . Turned it off for maybe three minutes and was able to drive back home.

  • wareaglejnm Apr 04, 2009

changed filter and fluid yesterday.seems to have done the trick, but have noticed it hesitates a little (feels like it slips a little) changing into 2nd gear.everything else seems normal.wonder what 2nd gear thing could be? any thoughts?

Myself I would give the fluid filter change a shot.
If the fluid still looks good then most likely you haven't smoked any clutches. It could just be the filter is clogged and not picking up fluid properly.
Of course it is possible that it is something more serious.
Parts store should be able to hook you up with correct filter and probably capacity.

I would just take it easy on it and maybe it will work it self out after a few miles. It could have maybe picked up something in the shift valve.

2002 xc70 when going from park to drive can feel a **** into gear , no other signs of slippage in other gears or while driving . The car has been faithfully serviced and the transmission fluid changed

I feel you should go to a reputable mechanic. Ask for him to check it out. this could be a serious problem but maybe not. Get it checked before you lose all drive power.

Transmission slips after engine warms up

It isn't when the engine gets hot, it is when the transmission fluid gets hot that the slipping starts, due to wear of the clutches and gears inside the transmission.
First, check the fluid level to make sure it is full. If it is low, bring fluid level to full and see if that helps.
About all the owner can do with slipping automatics is trying a transmission fluid and filter change to see if transmission revives and stops slipping. The bottom pan is removed, fluid (about 6-8 quarts) is drained, and a new filter is installed before the pan is replaced with a new gasket, sealed up, and fresh fluid added. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes the transmission is worn too bad to help, and you are left with looking for a replacement transmission.
Check the fluid level first. Good luck.

My came with a code po734 is that a big problem?

DTC P0734 - Improper Ratio for Fourth Gear.
P0734 is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 4th gear position even if electrical circuit is good.

This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:

Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B

A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor
B: Engine speed signal from Engine Control Module (ECM)
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes

If the actual gear position is higher than the position (4th) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Incorrect transmission shifting

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit

Tech notes: Start by inspecting the transmission fluid level and condition, and change fluid if necessary.

Test and check it and send us ypur comments.
