Antifreeze drip on drivers side inside cab of 2000 Audi A6 2.7T

Left my house today and within a few minutes steam started to rise out of defrost vents, I returned home immediately to discover antifreeze dripping from behind the dash on the drivers side, but no where else. I do have dual climate control in the vehicle. The next few hours it continued to drain coolant?!? Help!!

is there hose inside the cab?

  • bryan440 Apr 03, 2009

Had some leakage under but couldn't easily see the source, but would that cause spray into the cab?

Leaking heater core or hose that feeds it. look for hoses that pass thru the firewall to passenger compartment. Most times the hose is clamped to a pipe at the firewall so you may just need a hose

probably not. Is there any coolant under the car? If so find where it came from, under the hood at the back of the engine (firewall). If there are no leaks under the hood/car then you most likely have a bad heater core

I have a 2000 4.3L silverado. Heater & AC works but when defrosters are turned, on my windows fog. Why???

Check coolant level, if it's losing coolant, you may have a heater core leak. Does it smell like antifreeze in vehicle when defroster on? If by chance your ducting drain is plugged, it may just be water or condensation build up inside where core is. Antifreeze leak will also put a sticky film on inside of windshield, so if you wipe it with finger and it feels sticky, it may be a core leak. Be sure to double check heater hose connections in to firewall/heater core, just to be sure your leak isn't a bad hose connection before going to far if core appears to be leaking. A pressure test on system may give you a better idea what's going on. If all checks out and no leak apparent, be sure your AC compressor is engaging when in defrost mode, as that is what helps remove the moisture in the air during defrost. If compressor is not engaging, it will take much longer to remove moisture in the cabin.

What problems would a bad heater core cause

A bad heater core could cause a couple of isses. If it is plugged internaly you would get no heat. If it is leaking you would have anti-freeze dripping into the cab on the right side or dripping under the car in the area of the right floor board.

No heat we changed thermostat heater core wondering if there are fuses or relays that could be involved

Remove rad cap start vehicle be sure engine antifreeze is full. After running for 5-10 minutes you should see air bubbles rising nonce they stop close cap you should have heat.If you do not perhaps you might consider removing the thermostat to make sure the spring side of thermostat is facing the engine and not the thermostat housing.

I have such problem on audi s4 b5 2.7bt . when i switching off ignition and turn it on after several minutes, the water temperature is about 110 degree, and after this when i drive everything goes ok....

What you describe is quite normal. While the engine is running and the coolant is circulating the thermostat maintains the engine within its operating temperature range. When the engine is switched off there is still considerable heat within the engine and the coolant will continue to absorb this heat. With no coolant circulation, the coolant inside the engine will register a temperature rise to the extent your gauge measures. This temperature rise may persist for up to 15 minutes until the natural thermo-syphon of the cooling system starts to dissipate this heat build up and the engine starts to cool down. Because the cooling system is pressurised, the coolant is prevented from boiling off at this temperature above boiling point. Once the engine is restarted the coolant flow is re-established taking this excess heat from the engine and the system temperature returns to normal.

Water is dripping from outer heater unit and soaking passanger side of front carpet.

There are two causes of fluid dripping from the heater core/ac evaporator housing. First, if it is running inside the vehicle and getting the carpet wet as described then it is most likely a bad heater core leaking antifreeze into the cab. Secondly, if it is dripping outside only when the a/c or defroster is running then it is the normal expulsion of condensation and is harmless.

IF I HAVE A LITTLE LEAK OF ANTIFREEZE ON MY DRIVER SIDE UNDER THE DASH BUT THE DEFROST STILL WORKS, WOULD THAT BE MY HEATER CORE? THE HEAT DOESNT WORK BUT THE DEFROST IS LUKE WARM

I would say that it's your heater core that has a leak or one of the connections in the dash near it. There's nothing else inside the dash area that would be leaking antifreeze. Make sure you are keeping the levels of coolant up to specs and take care of that asap. Good luck!
