Replacing the mirror with out removing the whole mirror 97 jeep

no symptoms posted (broke glass or ???) can we be on same page?
"how do I switch," verb switch , the mirror as switches inside, too.

please say what that word means. switch and the failure.
1: remove and replace with new.
2: move right to left and left to right side.

why would you do that #2

these,NASA grade mirrors are very complex... not just glass and plastic. heaters ,motors, memory , etc.

the FSM cover all tests for the mirror, including scan data.

ill quote the FSM now , 8 steps (just 1 fail,not heat, not memory failure or fold failure)
ONE MIRROR INOPERATIVE
(1) If the one inoperative mirror is on the passenger
side, go to Step 2. If the one inoperative mirror is
on the driver side, go to Step 3.
(2) Check if the passenger front door will lock and
unlock using the power lock switch on the driver side
front door. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, go to Step 6.
(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. Remove the trim panel from the front door.
Disconnect the 12-way mirror wire harness connector
from the door wire harness connector.
(4) Using two jumper wires, test the mirror as
shown in the Mirror Test chart (Fig. 2). If the mirror
tests OK, go to Step 5. If the mirror does not test
OK, replace the faulty mirror.
(5) Disconnect the 12-way door wire harness connector
from the door module connector receptacle.
Check all of the circuits of the door wire harness
between the connector for the mirror and the connector
for the door module for opens or shorts. If all of
the circuits are OK, replace the faulty door module.
If any of the circuits are not OK, repair the open or
shorted circuit(s) as required.
(6) Use a DRB scan tool and the proper Diagnostic
Procedures manual to test and repair the faulty Programmable
Communications Interface (PCI) data bus
communication between the two door modules.

you can not replace just the glass. you need to replace the whole mirror. sorry

you should be able to purchase just the miror from the factory dealer >note: thy want to sell the whole asmebly so be ready to tellem thats unexceptable
since there just going to order the mirrior and tell you thy replaced the whole thing!

i recomend finding a local glass store and having them cut the mirrior for you as its usaly cheaper and 3-5 days faster

on reataching the mirrior use a full sticky tak sheet not just 2 strips like from the factory as the 2 or 3 strip method causes them to break if bumped to hard
as you have already found out >yours is broken!

If the glass broke when it fell out any windshield repair shop can make and install a new mirror. If it didn't break go to the hardware store and get a squeeze tube of bathtub silicone sealer and a roll of black electrical tape if you don't have any. Run a bead of silicone around the edge of the mirror back and a few dots in the center. Stay in about a 1/2 inch so it wont bleed out when you press it on. Using a couple of blocks of wood or plastic or anything non-metallic on the mirror face, make 2 or 3 wraps around the mirror and mirror bracket with the black tape. Stretch the tape as you wrap to put some tension on it but not real tight, just snug. Do this on both ends of the mirror and leave it for a day to let the silicon set up and cure. Then remove the tape and shims and you shouldn't have any more problems with that mirror. Hope this helps.

You can buy stick on replacement mirror glass for most models in good motor accessory shops.These just stick on to the existing glass if there is enough left to stick it to.
If not the dealer will supply the glass seperately but its a little tricky to fit and might be well worth letting them fit it too as it is very easy to break while fitting.

Exterior Mirror Glass Removal

1. Position the inner edge or the exterior rear view mirror glass to its maximum travel.

1. WARNING: Place a shop towel between the exterior rear view mirror glass and the hand to avoid personal injury in the instance of glass breakage.
   Grasp the outboard edge of the exterior rear view mirror glass and pull outward.

1. Remove the exterior rear view mirror glass.
   • If equipped, disconnect the heated rear view mirror glass electrical connectors.

Installation

1. If equipped, connect the heated rear view mirror glass electrical connectors.

1. NOTE: An audible click will be heard during installation.
   Press firmly in the center of the exterior rear view mirror glass until it snaps onto the exterior rear view mirror motor.

That dependso on if the housing itself is broken then yes. If the face plate that is attached to the mirror itself is flapping around then maybe. If it is just the mirror, just go to your neighborhood auto glass shop and but a "Ready-Cut" mirror for a small amount of money. they come already cut to fit perfectly. As for removing the old glass, take a very small flat screw driver and pry the glass away from the face plate. Once completely cleaned out use the adhesive from the ready cut and place them on the face plate. Next press the new mirror onto the flace pate, being careful not to press to hard or it will snap it in half.

the whole asssembly or just the mirror glass?

if you can get a flat mirror cut to fit and stick it on with araldite

Usually its easier and cheaper to buy the whole assembly rather than try to just replace the mirror. If you go to a junkyard and buy it there they will show you how to do it.
