When turning steering wheel - either way, clunking sound.

Hello
I have a 1999 pontiac grandam se 4 cyl. The problem i am having is when i have too turn a corner OR make a sharp turn - either going slow or fast - it will make a clunking sound. When i'm driving straight, no problem, only when having to turn the steering wheel do i hear a clunking sound and as the wheel straightens back out the clunking sound goes away. Again this is turning either way, at slow or making a sharp turn. Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions. Anita - Michigan

Dangerous THANK YOU for being so kind to be helpful. So you state, or the way i'm reading it is, if its this CV axle thang, there are two of them fix BOTH if even one is bad? correct, and with a ripped boot, i will go and have a look but regarding speed, it can be just backing up or going forward and having too turn the wheel either right or left and it will make that clunking sound but then goes away when the wheel is straight and then makes no noise at all, again only clunking sound when the wheel is being turned either in a stopped position or a slow position and the turn is A TURN not just navigating to go straight, just turning left or right.
    Have yourself a wonderful Easter.
    Much obliged

Sounds like you have a bad CV joint, this will make a clunking or clicking noise like you described only when turning, and varies with vehicle speed.

Have it repaired before it breaks and leaves you stranded, or damages anything else.

I can't comment on how much a CV axle costs in MI, but up here in Vancouver they run about $140.00 for a NEW one from Cardone. I wouldn't recommend a used one, or a reman unit. I can change these in about an hour or less, but the book time is 1.1 I believe, so it depends on your mechanics hourly rate.

There are two CV axles, but the one with the ripped boot is the most likely culprit. You can see if the boots are ripped by looking underneath the car right behind center of the tire. If both boots are ripped, I would suggest changing them both.

    Hope this helps.

Here is the Technical Service Bulletin that maybe of help, worth looking into but can't guarantee that it would fix your problem Steering - Steering Column Clunking When Turning TECHNICAL Bulletin No.: 01-02-32-001P Date: November 25, 2009 Subject: Clunk Felt/Noise Heard From Steering Column, Steering Gear and/or Front Of Vehicle During Turning Maneuver and/or Steering Wheel Rotation (Replace Intermediate Shaft As Directed) Models: 2001-2004 Buick Regal 2005-2008 Buick Allure (Canada Only), LaCrosse 2000-2008 Chevrolet Impala 2000-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue 2004-2007 Pontiac Grand Prix Supercede: This bulletin is being revised to add the 2008 Buick LaCrosse/Allure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-02-32-001O (Section 02 - Steering). Condition Some customers may comment on a clunk type noise coming from the front of the vehicle while driving during a turning maneuver.

1. Locate a large area (parking lot) where the vehicle can be turned in a tight circle. 2. Turn the steering wheel to the right and/or left all the way to the steering lock, then off the steering lock a 1/4 turn. 3. Drive the vehicle approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) in a circle, preferably over rough pavement or seams on the road surface. 4. Drive the vehicle straight ahead at idle speed while applying and releasing the brake pedal. Listen/feel the steering wheel for the clunk/noise condition. 5. If a clunk is felt in the steering wheel, the MOST likely cause is the I-shaft - not the steering gear. Continue with the correction. Correction DO THIS - Replace the intermediate shaft DON'T DO THIS - DO NOT lube the intermediate shaft Replace the existing intermediate shaft

replaced front and back brakes already ??? This has nothing to do with the ABS ,traction control is part of the anti-lock brake system . Light's on DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the ABS control module . Sorry but , your best bet ,take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop , before you hurt yourself. Take's year's to learn how to diagnose these electronic control systems

have you tried giving it a hard ****? some models (i know from experience) you put your key in, depress the brake and give the steering wheel a hard **** to unlock. hey, it won't cost to try.

Had the same problem. PONTIAC has issued a TSB that dealer know about. The Engine is MIS-ALIGNED and needs add'l rods to be installed to fix this problem. This will be done AT YOUR EXPENSE. I found this out the hard way.
