2005 Jetta GLI 1.8T. Ignition switch I believe. Car will shut off autmatically while driving. Lose all gauges, tripometer, clock, lights, EVERYTHING for a split second. Sometimes when I turn the key to the ON position, the message display cuts in and out and seems to be dim IF it even comes on at all. Turn the key to start and not even the solenoid clicks. I was told that there was a brand new ignition switch installed 2 months ago but am beginning to wonder. When the dash screws up, I jiggle the key and it seems to help clear everything up but when everything is working fine jiggling the key has no response at all. Someone suggested a "power relay". I found the relays under the dash but none of them when pulled seemed to shut anything in the cab off.
I am trying to replace the ign. switch now but can't seem to remover the lower plastic panel on the column, Do I have to pull the wheel? I really don't want that airbag going off. Any help would be great. Thanks!

its definitely not the starter, once you start your vehicle the starter is not part of the running of your car. could be a weak fuel pump, could be a bad fusible link/ connection, loss of ignition
Worn ignition switch. If you have a lot of keys on your keychain try taking the ignition key off the keychain and see if the car continues to do this. If so replace the ignition switch as the detente are worn out.
have the alternator charge rate checked as sounds likely to be low and not enough electrical power , when lights on , at low speed to keep ignition running
Hi,
whilst i am not familiar with the actual car i would say...
if it cuts out immediately then its electrical...check coil, ignition amplifier etc.
If the car cuts slowly by losing power, spluttering etc it will be fuel related....fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter.
Does the car restart immediately or do you have to leave it for a while?
what happens just prior to the vehicle shutting down?
Roger
you can unhook the fuel line where it connects to the fuel rail and turn the key on and see if you get fuel but it's risky you don't want it to spill over the engine. you may just need a new filter or maybe an intermittent short at the fuel pump. could even just be the power supply plug for the fuel pump
TRY ANOTHER KEY.STILL WONT ACCEPT KEY.YOU HAVE KEY IGNITION SWITCH TO IMMOBILIZER FAULT.YOU NEED A VOLKSWAGON MECHANIC TO BRING SCAN TOOL TO TRY FIX OR REPROGRAM KEY AND IMMOBILIZER SO CAR CAN BE TOWED THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WITH OUT DAMAGING ANYTHING.
I would check the ignition switch. You can unplug the small wire at the starter, with a test light check and see if power is at the plug when you turn the key to the start postion. If there is power there, you may have a bad starter solenoid. I've had to replace a few on my VW, (86 Scirocco, 91 Jetta GLI)
Hey Guys.. This problem is the Coil Packs. There is a recall out on all 1.8t Motors. If you haven't had an issue, its no rush but should be completed. If you have the sputtering, low power, struggle from the engine, bring it in to an Audi/VW dealer. They'll fix it free of charge. Done and Done.
Ignition switch and wire harness for ignition switch. My husband did both. I was losing dash gauges intermittently and overdrive. Now that is fixed and six months later looks like I need the multi function switch(turn signal, wipers, cruise lever). My husband has to take that all apart again for this problem. My turn signal blinker noise won't shut off. Driving me crazy.
