An intermittent miss at idle that gets worse under load on a carbureted vehicled is almost always an ignition problem. The solution is simple and cheap. Put a new set of spark plugs and ignition wires on it, a distributor cap and rotor could be done as well if has been awhile since they've been done. This is just maintenance. If all of this has been done recently, replace the spark plugs again. They get dropped and cracked all the time in shipping or installation. This will likely solve your problem

You can have car put on scope and it wll show any irregularities in the ignition system. It can also be dowithout any equipment. First, loosing ALL 8 spark plug wires, Now place the spark plug wires loosly back on, just secure enough to secure. You might need 2 people. Being the miss is more consistant in gear, APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE , put trans into drive and raise rpm's till miss is obvious. Remove ONE plug wire at a time, TILL THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN MISS. Thats the cylinder missing. Start with the spark plug, inspect, work back to wires and cap. An EXTREME result will be NO COMPRESSION.

Backfire at 60 to 70 mph

Check for bad fuel, but it sounds like it might be spark plugs or spark plug wires breaking down and cross firing or missing. If it is electrical you should have a rougher idle also.

I have a 83 monte carlo and I pull my lights on knob and all my lights come on;tail, tag, park, markers, but not my headlights....my turn signal lever( to turn on my brights) if I pull it the normal...

Don't waste your time looking for a headlamp relay. You will not find one. 1983 Monte Carlo does not use a headlamp relay. Your problem is most likely a defective headlamp dimmer switch. It is located about halfway down the upper left side of the steering column. It is secured by the same screws that mount the ignition switch. It is activated by a metal rod that pushes down on it when you pull back on your turn signal lever. It looks like the picture below.

Stop by any good parts store and have them do an OBII scan (fault scan) Most will do it FREE. They'll pull codes and identify what is causing your "miss"
