Guessing here, might help to know the make/model/year/engine.
Sounds like you're running in "limp mode" because one of your sensors is either bad or simply not hooked up. Perhaps TPS (throttle position sensor) or MAF (Mass AirFlow)
It sounds like you have a clutch problem, this is what happens when your clutch is no more, You may have noticed it getting sluggish for some time or lots of motor and not much acceleration. If this sounds familar, get your clutch checked. When it gives up, you are not going anywhere.
I think it sounds like a transmission issue..take it into a shop for a diagnosis and see what they tell you..it seems like there may be an internal hydraulic issue with it..when some of these transmissions are constructed out of aluminum for weight saving, this metal is porous on the surface unless it has been machined or tooled..these small cracks and crevises within the case will rob the system of hydraulic pressure created by the pump to make the gears work.. also see if the fluid it has is conaminated with dirt or shavings..this causes the seal units to leak internally and subsequent pressure loss to..may do a fluid and filter change and see if things clear up..some models wont allow this as it does a washout and ruins the transmission..be warned..if this is the case with your model..dont do it.. have a technician look it over..its worth the money...please repost findings..
