2001 nissan altima idle surges

I have taken the nissan to the dealer before and they said the problem was " a base idle arm". But the idle does surge and its not smooth. A couple of times the car did die.

I have a 2001 Nissan Altima with 2.4 engine. The engine surges badly at idle speed but runs well at all other speeds. I have replaced plugs, wires, cap and button as well as air filter with no change. I have checked all visible vacumn lines and they look good. Any ideas?

I had same problem. It turned out to be intake gasket. If it surges when u come to stop or in park, u may want to look at corners of intake, spray something that burns around intake , if the idle levels out it is gasket.

Yup, intake gasket for sure. Pretty much the only issue that model car has. Other than that, bullet proof cars.

Surging idle 2003 nissan altima s

I think you have an air leak, a vacuum line loose, or possible intake manifold gasket leaking, maybe your big air intake hose is leaking. spray carb cleaner or soapy water around mating surface of intake and on vacuum lines and connections. If idle changes, there is your leak. good luck.

Got a 99 Nissan Altima 2.4, t-chain broke... replaced head and all t-components... start up surging idle and whistling off idle... engine runs smooth and great power off idle

the surging and whistling sounds like there might be a vacuum leak that is causing this.recheck all vacuum lines and surfaces were this is a gasket that seals a vacuum source.smooth running and good power off idle suggest this leak only affects the motor at a low(idle)rpm.

Idles fast,surges

if the throttle body was replaced or cleaned or battery was diconnected for an extended period then the idle value you needs to be relearned.im not aware of any way to do this without a scan tool that supports this function or taking it to the dealer .

1997 Nissan Hardbody has rough idle/surges/stalls

the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

My 2001 nissan altima feels like it isn't getting gas when I am idling. I had the fuel filter changed and it still wants to die on me. Do you know how to increase the rpms, so it will run higher when I am...

Hi Jerry,
Is the idle surging?? going up and down, while at idle?? and not beeing nice and smooth, or the RPM's just drop down and the car dies?? You don't want to touch any of the factory settings on the throttle chamber aka idle screw on the throttle body. That's factory set for life. You may have a IAC -AAC valve problem which a "air volume control valve". Buut let me know first, what you find as far as the "surging up/down goes", but it doesn't die.
