The alternator fuse is fine how do I check the regulator?

  • ddyo44 Apr 04, 2009

the only fuse I could find for the alt. was a 15 amp and it is also the fuse for the fuel pump. I figure that there is another larger one but I don't know which one it is I do not have the fuse diagram or the owners manual. Is there some sort of relay switch or something of that nature I could check as well

Have you checked the alternator fuse? The regulator needs power from the fuse to turn on the alternator. The old alternator could have blown the fuse.

What was the amps of the fuse you checked?

  • Anonymous Apr 04, 2009

There should also be a bolted in 75 or 80 amp alternator fuse. But just take a test light and make sure you have power at the output terminal of the alternator and power at the plug connector of the alternator. Also the Battery light should go out when you unplug the alternator plug, this will test the light circuit.

I would try the regulator, there is a few tests to see if the alternator is charging, use a multi meter and check the b post on the alternator and earth and see what voltage it is producing, check all those sort of things and you will find the problem, make sure the battery terminals are very clean or they won't accept charge as well, hope this helps

2004 Pontiac Montana -brand new battery, new alternator(not rebuilt). have to jump start and runs for a while then dies some times wont take charge. battery will die not running in a day. very intermi

First, you can't and shouldn't test an alternator by disconnecting the battery cable while the engine is running. You run the risk of cooking the alternator and the computer. Thats how we used to test generators back in the last century.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ? Is the battery charge warning light on ?
There should be a fuseable link between the alternator and the battery that could keep the alternator from charging the battery.
The ignition module would have no effect on the charging system.

Battery died....replaced battery, kept loosing charge....replaced alternator....I am get a reading from the alternator and from the battery, but the alternator is not charging the battery.....what do I...

have alternator checked at auto parts store. I bought an alternator at P.B.'s
auto parts after the second one was bad had next two tested yep had four bad alternators right off the self fifth one was good. if alternator is good look for pinched wire or wire grounded on cars frame causing a constant drain on battery
or small light not shutting off like glove box light, light down by foot, light under hood or back up light staying on.

Is there a fuse between the alternator and battery? i just put a new bat. in and got stranded charged bat. and died again so im thinking alt . is bad! any help would be greatly appreciated

I would test the alternator before replacing it. It would most likely be the alternator if you have replaced the battery. If you remove the alternator you can take it to most part stores and they can test it for you.

Battery light comes on solid when driving, flickers at idle. Battery or alternator?

Both battery and alternator have to be properly tested. I have seen both go defective at the same time.
A proper load test on the battery, and a proper voltage and current test on the alternator will determine where the fault is.

Battery light on tested bat and alt both good light still on

If the light is on and the alternator is good then you either have a short to ground in the wire that runs the charge light or there is a diode in the alternator that is bad.The alternator will test good with a bad diode if it is only tested for the voltage it reaches but if you were to check the amperage output it would be down from it's output rating.
