Audi A3 1.8t 1998 - lights alert - handsfree gadget

Hi,
I just bought an Audi A3 1.8T 1998, just wondered did anyone know if there should be a warning alarm to let you know if you've left your lights on when your about to leave the car? There wasnt one on my previous Golf, and he amount of times I had a flat battery is head melting.
Also there seems to be a wee gadget above the radio with a microphone wired behind the dash up to beside the sunvisor, must be some sort of handsfree thing, not sure if it a standard item with the car or something previous owner added, doesnt work, wonder should there be a fuse or something for it or what it even is, any ideas?
Many thanks,
Michael

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply, i've checked your suggestions and the interior light doesnt come on when i open the door, so presume it doesn't recognise the door signal, do you know if this is an easy fix?

    Thanks,

    Michael

Hi I have an Audi A3 2005 and 4 days ago I had a handsfree Parrot MKI9200 Kit fitted. I now have a flat battery, tried jump starting it which did work, but then when I went to check the battery 30 mins later, it was dead as a do-do. Do you think that this could be a fuse problem? Upon turning the ingnition on (whilst the battery is flat) there is a 'ticking' sound coming from the fuse box. Or could it simply be that I have a flat battery that needs charging? If so would leaving the engine running for 15mins charge it up enough?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Your A3 should sound a warning beep if you leave your lights on. For this to happen the light switch would be in the side, or dipped position, the key out of the ignition and the drivers door open. If it does not sound the car may not be getting either the door or key signal. To check the key out signal, key the ignition to the on position, turn on the radio (probably only work if a standard radio is still fitted) then key off and remove key, if the radio goes off, its a good sign thats ok. For the door signal make sure opening the drivers door brings on the interior light on, this shows it recognises when its open. Let me know if anymore advise is needed.
As for the mic wiring, as far as I'm aware there were no standard/optional phone kits for this age A3.

I dont know if you've checked already, but make sure the interior light switch is in the correct position - to come on when doors open and check it works for other doors. If it does, but doesnt for the drivers door the most likely and fairly common fault is the door lock/latch unit. It will need to be replaced, its also worth checking that in its current state that the vehicle is locking correctly, check the handles the next time you lock it (by the remote).

To replace the door lock the door car will need to be removed, its an awkward job at the best of times as there as several fiddly levers/rods to link up and adjust. Unless your used to jobs of this kind and have a selection of tools, I'd reccommend you take it to a specialist. Hope this helps. Let me know.

You really need to run the Diagnostic programme to get the fault code in order to pinpoint the faulty part. See here for possible fault -

Mk1 A4 ABS warning light

I have a 2000 Audi A4 and the break wear sensor warning light come on for me too. It does not flash and is orange in color. I have asked the Audi dealer twice about it and they told me it's because the previous owner put aftermarket break pads on it, thus messing up the sensors. I don't know about the ABS warning and other than that I wish you luck on it.

Dome light stays on. Always says theres a door ajar.

The sensors are in the latch assembly. Try opening the doors and spraying the latches with WD-40 that will usually fix it.

Use an adaptor specific to Audi..The module will allow fast hookup and won't cause warning lights on the dash to light up..

Icon pops up. A circle with 3 lines on each side.

Sounds like a brake pad warning light. There are 'sensors' in your front brake pads to let you know when they are low, if they are genuine audi pads then you usually have quite a bit left on the pads when it first warns you. Worth getting them checked out though and the rear as they're not monitored. This link should help.
