I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with just over 51K miles. This morning during my attempt to start the vehicle, the engine cranked repeatedly, but would not fire. I belive the fuel pump has gone out. Is this something I can replace myself?
Can you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn key?(have an assitant turn key and listen for a buzz near the fuel tank) i think you have to take the fuel tank out to fix it.

you will notice that your vehicle acts like it is starving for fuel, and sometimes , the engine will even die, and then start back up, a lot of fuel pumps can be saved by people not driving their vehicles with a 1/4 or less amount of gas in the tank, because when the the tank gets very low, the fuel pump has to work harder to pump the gas, and even overheats when trying to pump the low amount of gas to the engine therefore resulting in the fuel pump going out.
check the fire at the coil as well as distributor if you dont have fire there when cranking then check your igniton module if there is fire? then your fuel system has shut down could be a faulty pump / filter/ or stuck injector which happens in cold weather and having just a drop or two of water in your fuel system
2 things: fuel filter needs to be replaced, if done already, tank and pump should be ok as vehicle is only 5 yrs old, but may be dirty from bad fuel and/or foreign contamination, have the tank flushed. plz rate-bozcro
good morning to you and welcome to fixya.com. hope we can get you fixed here. just a couple of questions first? have you changed the fuel pump yet? if so where did you buy the pump from? your pump is actually building up to much resistence and is unable to overcome it in turn no power is getting to pump as needed. i have a grand cherokee with 230k so i love hearing that you have that many miles. lets keep you rolling. let me know and ill help you out.
Same thing happened to me at about 140k. It was the fuel pump. Best way to test if your pump is failing and loosing pressure is to see if the car will start immediately after it has been running, or turn the key to the alt position for a few minutes before starting. If your engine fires faster after it has been running or the key has been in the alt position you will probably need a new fuel pump. Great news is with a very deep socket to get the tank straps off its a 30 minute job to replace the pump/filter assembly.
First install a fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail and check the
pressure during crank. It should be about 30 psi.If the pressure is not
good then it could be a bad fuel pump relay or fuel pump itself (in the
tank).
If the fuel pump pressure is good then you could have a bad crank sensor.
Could be a sensor.I'm thinking more along the lines of a fuel pump or fuel filter. If the fuel pump is going bad..similar symptoms.Would be advisable to install a pressure gauge at the engine, and check fuel pressure when it's acting up.
