I have a 96 Sub OUtback with no rear headrests. Anyone replaced it with one from a newer model that has headrests? a 97 or 98?

It is extremely simple. Loosen the screw, believe it is a hex head but may be torx, on the bottom of the crossbar and the crossbars will pop right off.

should have a button to push down at the bottom of the headrest arms that allows it to be removed

The releases are located inside the seat back. This pic will give you a good idea of where to look for them. It's easier with 2 people, one pushing the releases and another lifting the head rest out. http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/download/file.php?id=1748&mode=view

You should be able to go to the dealer and buy the center lap belts and can install them without having to by the seat just call your loacal dealer they can tell you how much thy are, less expensive than the seat.
Testimonial: "Thank you avid101. You have provided more information than i was able to get from my dealer and from GM. Neither wished to even address my question."

Push the lower seat cushion toward the rear of the car and lift, there's 2 hooks approx. 12" or so either side of the center of the seat.
The seat back is held in with 2 bolt located on the lower outside corners.
You'll have to unbolt the seatbelts from the floor to completely remove the seat back.
