My Jeep engine temperature reaches up to 260 degrees (the max on the gauge) when I am at a standstill for more than a minute or two. This problem doesn't seem to occur when going fast enough. There do not appear to be any water leaks and I have made sure there is sufficient water in the reservoir. The temperature gauge seems to be reading it correctly, as I can faintly smell the burning scent when opening the hood. Please help!
Three possible solutions:
1. Bad Thermostat
2. Fan Relay (most likely)
3. Bad Fan
When the GC reaches a temp of 180 Deg. F the fan relay sends a signal to the fan to turn on, once the temp lowers (around 155 Deg. F) the relay turns off the fan, and so the cycle continues. If the relay is bad there will be no signal to the fan to run. While you are driving your vehicle there is ambient air moving thru the radiator, cooling the engine, but once you encounter slow/heavy traffic or stop there is no air moving and the temp goes up, the fan will not kick in and the vehicle will overheat.
If the fan motor is not working the same will happen, but a more expensive fix, as the motor comes with the fan.
If the Thermostat is stuck in the open position, the water travels to fast in the engine and heat exchanging is not an efficient process, therefore the vehicle might overheat when stopped or in slow traffic.
I had same problem. I replaced the fan relay, problem solved
The relay is under the plastic thats under the right front headlight. Easiest way to replace this relay is to pull right headlight out, and use a hole saw, preferably the same size that u would use to install a door knob on the entry door in your house. Drill towards the right side under headlight. Relay is riggt there . Then just ducktape the hole when replaced. Hey, it's a 2001 ducktape does wonders. Good luck

Hello, have you checked to see if your cooling fan kicks on ? also how long has it been since you've had the thermostat replaced ? does the drive belt look good that turns the pully for your water pump ?
