I have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo not shifting properly

I have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo and according to the transmission shop I took it to because it was acting as if it were slipping they told me that there was nothing wrong with the tranny that it was infact the engine telling the tranny to shift late, they said I probably needed to change the Camshaft Position Sensor according to the codes that showed up when they hooked it up to the machine because my check engine light was on. I can get it to shift into 1st and 2nd gear pretty smooth but after that when trying to get up to 45mph or higher I have to push the gas down harder in order to get it to shift into gear. Anyone have any other suggestions, I found it hard to believe that it wasn't the tranny but I'm no expert. Thanks

Redux 1
error 1 not scanning the PCM first to see errors
error 2 guessing it's bad trans, its not.
error 3 based on above, going to trans shop with good trans, (waste of cash for sure)

next time car runs funny
get it serviced in any ASE rated shop in town (USA answers )

the find the engine is weak and as such no transmission can shift as expected with any weak engine.

why guess and go broke.
get a ASE shop to test drive car, and and scan it.
and check fuses and fluid levels first.

the transmission shop didnt lie to you
if he had you'd be $3000 hit on your VISA ,right>???
why not listen to the truth, when heard,
odd. no?

now my guess. gas engine Rodeo, no engine size stated
never had a tuneup this decade.?????????
never once changed out the cam belt now slipped a cog
and guess what, low engine power and soon dead engine.
there are 50 more reason for lost power
but those 2 top the LIST of CAUSES,

Lots of automatics have had electronic control for around 30 years that has become much more sophisticated over time. The same can be said of engine management and it was inevitable the two brains would be linked so they could talk to each other - and influence each other, though I believe the engine influences the transmission more.

I know little about autos because over here almost every car is a manual but I think it unlikely an engine fault that switches on the engine check light - meaning it is on the emergency get-you-home programme - would not affect the automatic transmission in some way.

There is really only one way to discover if this is true or false and that is to get your engine fixed.

there are vast DTC errors of the power train
    engine and trans.
even CEL glows, on gas cap loose here, and no effect what so ever on transmission.
in fact on my car 100s if DTC possible and not effect trans.
but yes, engine power low, effects all

the fact is the OP never once scanned the PCM
    so he works blind.
you can not fix modern cars lacking that tool
cant. (or look silly guessing like a kid)

his does have TCM and is 4L30-e box.
that is common here on Yankee Rodeo.
we have the books on it for his car.

actually they were linked on the first
    transmission ever, with electric controls
    starting from TCC lockup.
and then full shifting of all gears.
this happened in early 90s.(state side)
the transmissions got an -E on the end of the part-number. Millions GM boxes made in FRANCE do all that. (4L30-e is GM box in a Isuzu)
isuzu doesnt make boxes to do this.

the first ECU, had LOAD data . all did.
even as old as 1988, BY USA YANKEE LAWS (EPA)
(OBD we invented back then! its our baby)

The ECU EFI calculates fuel injection based on LOAD. so its natural has h3ll to send that to the TCM. for sure. and was in all cases.

the older cars used vacuum to send load data to the transmission, that is gone now
    "
    vAccum modulator device"
that load data is shared between the trans and engine
ECU, its transmitted from ECU to TCM
the TCM then shifts by RPM and LOAD.
all 20 years of transmissions do that .

on newer cars there can be 3 or more speed sensors to allow better shifting .
if you fail to scan it, you missed the boat step 1..

The TCM is a great thing
it allows 1 transission to fit and work on any car , just 1 box fits all, (same power/weight class, were talking millions of cars here)
    the savings is VAST.
and makes it shift better too.
and less governors to fail. etc.

actually all do now, even for CAFE laws here.
it burns less fuel. for a fact.
in fact, 9speed transmissions now for same reasons
and variable speed oil pump for same reasons.

even the TCC clutch lock saves vast fuel.
    that too is ecu regulated,

Hi, I have a trooper also, I am pretty sure if it has a speed sensor it would ;located on the transmission near the tailshaft. Not sure that will help, but mine is a standard, so I can't look for you.
or the transfer case maybe?

On my 2001 isuze rodeo is the shift solonoid inside the transmission and or can it be changed without pulling the trans. ?

It is inside the transmission under the belly pan mounted to the valve body. You just remove the transmission pan (not the transmission for heavens sake) and replace the shift solenoid pack.

Instrument panel does not reflect gear shift

You need a shift position switch. Its located on the drivers side of transmission where the shift rod hooks to transmission.

Poor Shifting

Well, if it was low on fluid, and it was driven for a distance, you could of wrecked the interior gears of the tranni or other parts. I'm not a tranni guy but I know if you run a vechile with low tranni fluid you're asking for a new tranni or to have that one rebuilt.

Auto Transmission 2000 Rodeo

It seems that the trans is slipping. The smell is from excess trans flood. If Trans is over filled, it can rupture seals and cause leaking that can get on the exhaust and burn.
