Gearbox Diagrams gearbox whine? tested wheel bearings for smoothness before removal of cv joints and they seemed fine but now that cv's are removed i turn them and they make quite a rumbling sound one side a little louder than the other. Is this normal? thought it was the gearbox whining but now thinking it maybe just the wheel bearings?

Good bearings make no sound
if turning the wheels with out the drive shafts produce rumblings , it is failed bearings

SOURCE: 1999 2.0L TD Suzuki vitara the clutch pedal was

Pilot bearing (pressed into flywheel) or release bearing (presses against clutch pressure plate)?
Regardless, the repair is the same. Replace clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing & pilot bearing. Most flywheels are available or as part of a complete kit, minimum is to inspect & resurface flywheel when replacing clutch assymbly.

SOURCE: CV Joints

You will usually hear a real loud clicking sound when your turning at a tight radius in either direction. Check the rubber boots over the joints. If they are cracked or ripped off you will need to replace them. There will be 2 on each side. If they are real noisy just replace the entire half-shafts. Shop around for axle shaft assy prices, typically $100.00 - $300.00 each side.

SOURCE: how to remove the gearbox from a 1999 suzuki swift

disconnect battery remove it & its cradle
jack it up & drain gearbox oil
remove the wheel & undo the axle nut in the centre!
[do not remove it yet]
undo the bottom control arm at its pivot point under the axle then seperate them !
pull swiftly outward to remove the drive shaft from the gearbox!
now there is the gear selector & speedo & clutchcables & starter motor to diconnect & or remove
remove gearbox mount But support the motor from underneath
undo all the bolts around the gearboxes bellhousing!
use a pry or large flat bladed screwdriver to part the gearbox from the engine & lift gearbox up & out! its very tight squeeze in there!!
Im sure now that you regret asking lol
dont forget while its out you may aswell do the clutch
good luck!
Cheers Rob.

Is your vehicle rear wheel drive?
If so have your drive shaft universals checked or carrier bearing.
Should it be front wheel drive have the cv joints checked.
The engine and gearbox mountings can also cause violent shuddering when accelerating

Verso gearbox leaking oil

There is a seal in the gearbox and this has been damaged so oil is leaking past it out of the gearbox. You will have to carefully replace this seal, to do this you need to take the gearbox out of the car, put it on a bench and carefully remove the old seal and press in a new one.

Whining noise off something at front either front wheels or gearbox

Hi,
It may be the front wheel bearing. A mechanic is needed to fix.

It may also be the CV axle....also requires a mechanic.

While driving when you turn the wheel slightly to the right you hear a noise with some vibration. front tires and brakes are new. could this be cv joints or struts?

Need more info but sounds like power steering gearbox or cv joints. What happens when you turn all the way left or right? Is it worst or better and what do the noises sound like? Whining or grinding?

Whining noise from passenger front wheel had wheel bearing replaced could it be gearbox

Wierd Wheel Noises:

New bearing is actually good? Take wheel off of the ground, vehicle in neutral and rotate the wheel by hand and see that there are no problems with the bearing, CV Axle, or the brakes. And put some pressure on the bearing as much as you can to make sure it is not binding itself.

More than one bearing has been damaged during installation. I now own a 10 ton press and keep it in my basement for the next time I have to replace my bearings. Thank goodness I always buy in pairs.

Here's to hoping you just identified your problem.

If not, then: Have someone turn the wheel in both directions while watching the CV Axle at both ends, to make sure it isn't the problem.

One more issue: Swap your tires front to rear, and rear to front, and drive to see if your noise changed locations, indicating a tire or wheel problem.

If everything you just checked is working properly, then you know what's next.

Good luck !
