2-wheel drive? or 4x4? If its 2-wheel i see no problem, 4x4 you might have a little more trouble because of the front rearend. You also might want to jack up engine to give yourself more room and you may have to unbolt the oil pump and take them both out at the same time.
Thats a great question. These jobs I despised more than any.The real only way you can do it in the truck is,Dropping the front differential, removing the cross member that the trans is mounted to,holding that with a jack and jacking the motor up to get more access. So really you don't have to remove but sometimes its easier. But what i have stated is what you'll need to take out in order to get the pan out.Advice, if you try and remove it with the front axle in you'll crack the oil pan.Theres just not enough room.I hoped I help you and good luck.If you need further assistance I'll be here along with the rest of us to help you.Have a great day...

Because you are replacing the motor i assume you threw a rod or did something internally went wrong. i would recomend getting a new oil pan or use the oil pan from the motor that is good it shouldnt mateer about the 4x4
Most vehicles do not have an oil drain plug for the tranny...you have to drop the pan to change the oil. Make sure you install a new gasket when you put it back on.
if you have the 2.4 motor this is your oil filter
Fram Extra Guard® - Oil Filter
Part # PH3682the oil pan comes out fairly easy,, you may have to remove some components to clear the sump pump that lays inside the pan, if you have a small enough hole, you can have it welded for pretty cheap, if you want to go that route, be sure whoever is doing the welding, drains the oil, and cleans the spot completely with brake cleaner or some other oil removing solvent, and let dry completely , if its just leaking around the gasket,, drop the pan and replace the gasket
There are alot of places where oil leaks out. The most common places on this engine are the front and rear crankshaft seals valve cover gaskets and yes, the oil pan.
