Many standard transmissions do not have a dipstick. Find the drain plug and above it (or nearby), about halfway up the tranny, there should be another plug, many need a 1/2" ratchet to remove. That plug is where you add fluid, and is also the level indicator. Add fluid until it begins to come back out of the hole. Your owners manual may tell you a little more.

did you check fluid level if low could have burnt up transmission-check fluid level also check color if brownish and smells burnt fluid either was low or overheated and possible filter problem---internal failure with a gear----selector cable damaged or disconnected
The vehicle should be running, transmission in park. Locate the dipstick, normally near or around the transmission, pull it out and check where the fluid level on the stick is, wipe off the fluid and check level again, to confirm readings. Usally you put the fluid in thru the dipstick tube, a long funnel will help. Watch that you don't over fill the transmission with too much, check level often while refilling.
The transmission fluid needs to be replaced and checked at a transmission shop or the dealer. In the manual is the information you need to when the transmission is due for service to keep your car running 100% and to keep the warranty valid. Good luck and hope this helps.
The four speed automatic shows a total fill (that is all the fluid it can hold) is 5.7 Quarts. So if you just dropped the pan and relplaced the filter, you shouldnt need more than 4 quarts and likely you would have a little extra with that.
