Can't locate the starter relay on a 1991 Toyota pick-up 4x4

I have been having a starting problem, solenoid clicks when turning the key, I replaced the contacts and happened again, tested the voltage on the bk/w wire on the solenoid and when the truck won't start I get about 5 volys, when it does I get battery voltage. I'm thinking the relay is bad so I bought one, now I can't locate it. I have read it is in the left kick panel but the only relay there is a three prong and the new one is a four prong.

Remove the starter from the vehicle, Remove the 3 small bolts that retain the cap on the solenoid side. Remove the solenoid cap, then the plunger. Examine the plunger for burnt marks, inspect the contacts that the plunger contacts onto...If you see anything that is burnt or worn down, replace all 3 parts. Easy fix. I do it 8-9 times a month. Cheaper than buying a new starter.

Probably the starter solenoid. I'm assuming it's a standard transmission. Does pushing the clutch down hard make any difference? There is a safety switch on your clutch pedal. If it's automatic, it would definately be the solenoid. And no, pumping the gas has no effect on the starter. It will help to flood the engine though. ( and that's a bad thing)

Where is the starter soenoid located on a 1991 Lexus LS400?

If the solenoid is clicking when you turn the key its very unlikely to be a relay fault, the relay controls the feed to the exciter wire which must be working for the solenoid to be clicking. If you haven't ruled out the battery completely do so by attaching jump leads, if that makes no difference you ideally need to check for a volt drop between engine and battery earth terminal and also main starter feed to battery positive, (the latter can be a problem with difficult to access starter motors tho.) if all wiring is ok its most likely the motor itself, if you can get to it give it a tap with something and see if it makes any difference. If it starts after a tap then its most likely the starter motor.

Many Toyotas have a problem with the large copper contacts in the starter solenoid. They get burnt and if they weld together, you'll have to take the battery cable off the battery to stop the starter.Pull the starter them remove and take apart the solenoid to find the contacts.Toyota does not sell solenoid contacts.Find a starter and alternator rebuilder in your area.I used to buy them for a buck a contact.

Starting problem

Hello LostLynne.
The most common issue is a bad contact in the starter solenoid.
This solenoid is part of the starter assembly and makes the high amperage battery to starter connection
When you hear the click the solenoid is activating but not completing the battery to starter contact.
If this is an original starter or been on for a long time I would suggest changing the starter assembly.
Also in your under hood fuse/relay panel there is a smaller relay that activates the starter solenoid that should be checked before replacing the starter. Although less common for that to happen it does occasionally cause a problem. Easy to replace too.
If you have further questions please ask me.

1993 toy paseo starting issue

When you twist the key to start, and solenoid is working, the power goes directly to the cable on the other side of the solenoid. If the starter does not turn the engine over, and you KNOW the solenoid is good, then you have a bad cable connection at the solenoid or starter OR the starter itself needs attention. After power goes thru the solenoid, no relay is required. JUST 12 volts.

Starter relay clicks when you turn ignition key on

no this is either caused by a defective starter solenoid (on starter) or a defective positive battery (red) cable, both are common on this year of explorer.

Same 1991 w/starting problem

open the door and listen for a click from under the car (starter solenoid). If you hear that click, along with the one coming from
the glove compsartment(starter relay), it's the wire between the starter solenoid and the relay...If you only hear the one click from the glove compartment( it's actually in the passengers door pillar), it's the starter relay ($15)
